“Good rather than excellent”

Spent Christmas on an all inclusive package here. Had a "Gala Dinner" on Christmas Eve which was fine, but Christmas Day Fayre was just like any other day, in keeping I guess with Portuguese tradition. The room was comfortable and spacious, excellent bathroom and everywhere spotlessly clean. Madeira is very hilly, there are 139 (shallow) steps from the road up to the main door of the hotel. The hotel is in a good location and there is a good local bus system running along the main road about 5 minutes walk from the hotel, in addition to there own free shuttle bus. The food was acceptable, if not particularly memorable.

Room Tip: The rooms on higher floors have better views

•Just back from holidays from All inclusive in Dorisol Hotels Estrelicia. Very poor all inclusive offers. Bar closed at 11 and always ran out of Local drinks no cocktails on all inclusive when asked for cocktails none was offered. So easy to offer cocktails on local drinks
•Food available from 8-10 and then 13-14 in between you could not get any snacks except cakes at 15hrs if you wanted a sandwich were told can't have anything until 16.00hrs. Staff did not know what was on offer on all inclusive.
•Food quality was poor no potatoes were on menu at night time only had options of fish and more fish and one meat dish. I found very little to eat at night. Salad bar had minimal offer.
•Entertainments was dancing performed by in-house entertainer which was repeated every other day. Entertainment lasted 30 minutes every night from 21.30hrs to 22.00hrs . I was there 2 weeks and saw the same dancing team about 10 times doing the same act.

“Excellent 3star hotel”

Just returned from a week's stay in Madeira. This hotel gave an excellent service, the staff could not have been more helpful and curtious. The area around the hotel is very steep so not for the people with poor mobility. Although the hotel is in need of re-decoration it would not put us off going there again, ok for a week..
The transfers were very smooth, we booked through Fleetway Travel based in Essex; I would recommend them and we would book with them again. Our trips were through MB travel in Madeira, these people gave a professional service.

“Mid Range Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 October 2011

Just returned from a lovely weeks holiday on the island of Madeira. Staying at the Dorisol Estrilicia, one of a group of three hotels that stand together. The location is fine and surrounded by similar hotels and plenty of restaurants and the hotel offers a courtesy bus down into Funchal, although it doesn't run in the evening. The hotel is in need of upgrading but we found it comfortable and adequate for a week.

The food wasn't brilliant and could do with improvements. I would give it 5 out of 10. I didn't go hungry and always managed to find something! I did notice that quite a few of the guests were complaining strongly amongst themselves and 2 or 3 actually asked to speak with management.

We found all the staff very helpful and friendly too.

The pool area was nice and relaxing with a nice outlook onto the ocean. It also had a bar/ snack bar that served nice food. There was an indoor pool, which was really useful to the older guests because it wasn't very deep and also sheltered from the searing sun. It was a very hot week.It also had a jacuzzi and small gym and spa.

The rooms had plenty of storage and good showers, again rather tired and could do with a make over but as stated earlier fine for a week. Hotel entertainment was provided by a young couple who were both dancers and although they were very good, it got a bit too much and could have done with more variety, in view of the fact it was all inclusive and most guests were in the hotel during the evening. We chose to go out 3 nights for a change.

All in all I would recommend this hotel as mid range in quality and cost. A word of warning it is very hilly and would recommend a lot of research before booking, especially for anyone with walking difficulties, even the approach to the hotel is really steep!

Room Tip: Ask for a balcony when checking in.We did and the receptionist gave us 2 sets of keys and said we co...

“Exactly what we expected -- Great Value”

We went with a group to Maderia ( our first time ) as a Package .. Transfers / Flight /Hotel for a very reasonable price -knew it was only 3* having read all the reviews from fellow contributors & have to agree with most of the postive comments . Very good value OK its a little tired _ in a built up area on a Hill but it reflect Maderia perfectly .Our room had a balcony & view I think we were on 6th floor it came with a small Kitchenette excellant for hot & cold drinks
When we were there sunny but too cold to use the spotless clean out door pool used the indoor very good + the spa very reasonable Staff very friendly explained all about the island etc Courtesy Bus / Coach took you right in to the centre of Funchal kept to the timetable
Recomend the Open Top Bus Tour (two companies not a lot of difference )
the ticket last for two days covers most of the Tourist Attractions Then if time take an Island Tour with a Mini Bus company
We tried Reids for afternoon Tea / Cakes etc for 30 euros + p .p definitely not worth it
Do try their small Bananas & Maderia wine definitely different whilst on the island
Lots of good local Restaurants nearby + do try the Hotel restaurant at the base of the complex All in all _-we enjoyed Maderia --not from what we saw a family type destination & very hilly for some one not too good on their feet Will return some time

Room Tip: Corner rooms seem to have a larger balconies
