Just returned from a lovely weeks holiday on the island of Madeira. Staying at the Dorisol Estrilicia, one of a group of three hotels that stand together. The location is fine and surrounded by similar hotels and plenty of restaurants and the hotel offers a courtesy bus down into Funchal, although it doesn't run in the evening. The hotel is in need of upgrading but we found it comfortable and adequate for a week.
The food wasn't brilliant and could do with improvements. I would give it 5 out of 10. I didn't go hungry and always managed to find something! I did notice that quite a few of the guests were complaining strongly amongst themselves and 2 or 3 actually asked to speak with management.
We found all the staff very helpful and friendly too.
The pool area was nice and relaxing with a nice outlook onto the ocean. It also had a bar/ snack bar that served nice food. There was an indoor pool, which was really useful to the older guests because it wasn't very deep and also sheltered from the searing sun. It was a very hot week.It also had a jacuzzi and small gym and spa.
The rooms had plenty of storage and good showers, again rather tired and could do with a make over but as stated earlier fine for a week. Hotel entertainment was provided by a young couple who were both dancers and although they were very good, it got a bit too much and could have done with more variety, in view of the fact it was all inclusive and most guests were in the hotel during the evening. We chose to go out 3 nights for a change.
All in all I would recommend this hotel as mid range in quality and cost. A word of warning it is very hilly and would recommend a lot of research before booking, especially for anyone with walking difficulties, even the approach to the hotel is really steep!
