This was a standard 3 star hotel which is what I paid for but the service, value and location made it a nice stay. An excellent room exactly as per my request - high floor, sea view, double bed, which I thought was great service. Location is fine, part of the hotel district of Funchal, with plenty of local services which I like. For breakfast lots of options with moderate quality, totally acceptable for 3*. I would definitely stay here again, though my advice would be to stay as high as possible on SW side for quietest room and sunset view.

Having read the reviews, where a bit apprehensive with regard to this Hotel
but I found it to be clean, accomodation basic but adequate for the purpose and value for money. A good base for seeing the area. We had a large clean room and the towels where changed every day, meals where fresh and well presented. The staff where pleasant, the safety box was 11.50 euros for the week, yes this Hotel is a bit dated and there might be a bit of peeling of paint on the shutter doors but for the price you pay it really is not a problem if your looking for 5 star pay 5 star prices.

For a three star hotel the Gorgulho provides good value for money, clean rooms and polite and friendly staff.
Having booked this online i was sceptical about the quality of the hotel especially after reading previous reviews. However, I can only assume other reviewers had 4-5 star expectation when they visited. Yes the hotel is dated and the bath room is like a trip back to the 80s and the paint was peeling on the balcony shutter doors, but the rooms were clean and had everything you need from a room you're only sleeping in, including a tv.
My only complaint really is that the balcony glass doors were only single glazed which made it difficult to block out the noise of the awful crooner on the karaoke across the road. The bed was also a bit hard.

The staff at this hotel are very helpful and better than some i've met at higher quality hotels and if i was in Madeira again I'd stay here again for a cheap and good value holiday. Compared to other hotels in this area of Funchal its in a great location too as close enough to the centre to walk in a 30 minute stroll and far enough away to not be too busy. Plenty of the bigger and better hotels and a long walk away from the centre making the buses a must. Should you wish to get the bus into funchal though there are bus stops very close to the hotel.

The hotel was nothing like the website photographs. The room was dull and unwelcoming. The bedding looked like army blankets and the sheets/pillow smelt sicky. The wall had mould going along the bottom, the bath enamel was off the bath and the bath slip mat was mouldy. When using the wash basin, the floor would be flooded due to a split in the pipes. When told the receptionist, we were told that it would not be repaired considering we were only staying for three nights. The coffee available for breakfast from the machine was very strong and bitter. When we complained we were told that we could buy a coffee from the bar but would cost us 3 euro. The staff were ok but could have been more polite/friendly. The swimming pool looked dirty which did not invite us to use. There was no air con in the room.
