“Budget Bargain!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

Just returned from 2 weeks over Christmas 2011. We were looking for a shorthaul winter sunshine break but not the usual mediterrainean venues, thus the semi tropical island of Madeira was ideal. Very impressed with this magical islands variety of flora and breath taking mountainous vistas and comfortable wintersunshine.
As a couple we were looking for an oasis of calm and relaxation and the Dorisol Florisol Hotel went a good way to providing it. At the outset having only spent £540 each for 2 weeks half board with a seaview and balcony we were ready to be disappointed if the basics weren't there. The Florisol gave us an excellent seafront venue with views and convenience for the nearby capital of Funchal. The one double (double bed not 2 single beds pushed together!) room appartment was spacious and no frills-functional. 'Josepheno' on the reception provided us with the cordial and efficient cheeriness one would expect from an island whose main industry is tourism.
Yes,some things were abit hit and miss, the Hotel furnishings in places were jaded although the reception area was tastefully done, after a dissappointing start the A La Carte menu picked up., the breakfasts weren't the usual overindulgences you might expect but again at the price we paid were are not complaining. The staff kept our room cleaned and replenished daily even on Chrismas Day we had a change of basics.
So overall we would recommend Florisoln for reasons of getting a good deal on a budget but if you are easily upset or overly-critical you might need to spend a little more elsewhere.

“Try if you're on a budget (at your own risk!), highly disorganized”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 December 2011

We were here for a week at the beginning of December 2011.
We booked a one bedroom apartment which was really big (one bedroom with balcony, bathroom with bathtub, kitchenette separate from the living room, living room with balcony).
There was plenty of space for 4 people.
The hotel is clean.

The price was very good for such a big apartment (364 euro).

but...

The forniture is quite old (seems like the hotel wasn't refurnished since 60's).
Doors are very old and they seem very dirt (also handles). The entrance door seems unsafe.

The safe was broken (there was no lock at all!!!!).

This is the first three star hotel we stayed were there wasn't any shower gel at all. I understand that being a apartment-hotel some items should be brought by us, but at least for the first night I would have expected some shower gel. Ideed we get a soap which was replaced only after 4 days (as the shower mat which was missing for half a week).

The kitchen had a microwave oven but was very very poorly equipped. 4 knives, 4 spoons, 4 forks..... There wasn't neither broom nor dustpan... so how we were supposed to clean after meals? We weren't and so the floor became crumby.... ants did appreciate it (to be fair to the hotel, I presume ants are a common problem in such a green, luxuriant place like Madeira).

The breakfast was always the same, except when there were left-overs (i.e. cakes) from the previous dinner. It was average quality except for orange juice (was like colored water) and cereals: why on earth should I choose between two different kinds of chocolate cereals? Bring some variety, please!

The hotel has outdoor pool and a hot tub.

The hotel website (http://www.dorisolflorasolhotel.com/index.html) claimed there was free wifi in all the hotel. Indeed there was poor strength signal only in the pool/restaurant area.

One night we were sitting in the outdoor area of the restaurant (where we found the best signal ever). When the restaurant closed we were closed out of the whole hotel.
They closed also a door which we used several times before to enter the hotel.
We claimed with the director and she told us that it was good that _all_ the doors at the restaurant level closes when the restaurant closes, for our own safety.
What about a sign on the door ?? What about respecting the closing times and not closing before the arranged time, even if there was no one, if that would limit the freedom of people of staying outdoor, in what the hotel claims to be the " garden " ?

To exit this trap we had to exit from the car park (we were lucky! That door was open! It was supposed to be closed too, for our own security!) After exiting from that (it was very dark) we were to go through a very narrow and dark flight of steps... what about if I fell down and broke a leg ?

The morning after we realized that the concierge who checked in us didn't give us the key!!
Terrible! Unforgivable!

After 3 days, at the end of our week, at the time we were supposed to write the hotel review, we were offered a 1-euro Estrelicia flower (you can buy everywhere in the island).
What poor and ridiculous way to regain our esteem!

The parking lot is free but has few places.

The location is good, but listen to me, try other hotels: there are plenty of it.

I won't recommend at all.

Room Tip: Avoid at all.

“Good value”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 October 2011

We stayed here for 2 weeks in October 2011 on a bed and breakfast basis in an apartment which had a sitting room, bedroom and separate kitchenette. There were also two balconies with sea views. The accommodation is a little tired and worn looking and in need of refurbishment, also note there is no air-con in the rooms. The breakfast was varied and good. The staff were friendly, helpful and efficient. The location is convenient, surrounded by good restaurants and coffee shops and close to the promenade. Overall this hotel was good value for the amount paid.

“Good location, good price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 October 2011

For this price this is good hotel in Madeira. Our family (parents and teengirl) lived in 2 rooms with small kitchen and bathroom (and 2 balcons) two weeks with a breakfast for 878 euros. Town center is 2,5-3 km far, in weekdays hotel offers a bus for free. Breakfast is almost OK, pool is big enough, staff is kind. If you go up to mountain, you find a levada, only 10 minutes by feet. And near hotel there is supermarket, only 50 m.
But - orange juice in breakfest was often mixed with water. Breakfest begins at 7.30, but our last morning at 8 we waited for many meals. And the preserved fruits (from a tin) were soured some mornings. Water in pool was cold. And some problem in bedroom - there is a little space between the beds, so wife or husband can fall in.:)
