Stayed with a family in Jardins d'Ajuda hotel in May of 2011. I had booked the hotel through a travel company together with a flight and the share of the hotel was maybe around 50 €/night. I'm trying always to make these hotel reviews based on the money spend. Also worth mentioning that I don't pay attention to the lobby area (in this hotel it is clean!), don't need special services from hotel staff (friendliness is enough), don't eat all my meals in the hotel and realize that this is not centrally located hotel.
First of all, the hotel is no longer 4 star. I've been here another time in 2004 and then it was 4 star. Now there is wear and tear all over (kitchen cupboard doors not closing properly etc.), BUT importantly bathroom was spotlessly clean and beds made every day and floors decently clean. Outdoor pool area was nice with gardens around. Same wear and tear all around, but nothing that will stick into your eye immediately and not gruesome. Water was clean and staff was cleaning the surroundings every night/morning, had a view to the pool area. Breakfast buffet was above average with some local cuisines, which I really appreciate nowadays when buffet breakfast seems to mean the same thing in every place. Did not try any other meals in the hotel. We had a room in tenth floor and a view was quite nice, pool area + a proper sea view from a balcony. Room was very spacious and had lot's of space for children to play on the floor.
+ Clean room and bathroom
+ Spacious rooms
+ Good view (10th floor, suppose that anything 5+ will do)
+ Good breakfast
+ Nice outdoor pools
- Not a 4 star anymore, a bit outdated and wear in many places
- Extra cost and deposits everywhere (car parking, safe, remote control)
- Location if central Funchal is a must (car or interests elsewhere in the Island cancel this con)
- Karaoke in lobby on some evenings (personally hate this activity)
