We stayed here in September and enjoyed our stay very much, largely due to the wonderful and helpful people at reception. At first, I must admit, I was disappointed when I saw the hotel, for I had originally planned for the 4 of us (me, hubby, our 2 young teen kids) to stay in an old hotel with much character and charm. However, when we arrived, the city had begun working on the pier, so it was way too noisy and we could smell the diesel exhaust. Next door was the Regency Club, and it looked like the only game in town so we booked it. The lobby looked dated and the rooms were a bit shabby. We got 2 rooms, but we couldn't get them adjoining so my husband and son stayed in a room with a good sized balcony, kitchenette and living area. I stayed with our daughter in another room that had 2 baths, a living area, and kitchenette plus a huge balcony overlooking the ocean. The balcony took some of the sting out of the fact that this place had no charm; at least we had an ocean view. Also, the separate bedroom provided a good amount of space and privacy. The rooms were very clean, and when my husband had a concern about a bit of mold on the window in his room, it was addressed immediately. The location was very good since there were many restaurants within walking distance, and it only takes about 10-15 min. to get to the old center of town. We enjoyed the pool area and liked that we could walk down the steps into the ocean, and that the ocean area was blocked off so it felt safe because you could swim without fear of being pulled out. Breakfast was good with the typical assortment of hot and cold foods, but the coffee was absolutely awful. Service at breakfast was curt, but efficient. I had to go the the hotel next door to get a decent cup. Joel and the other reception staff persons were just lovely and so helpful. Sure, this place could use a refurbishment, but we value a good staff, location, and room size more than updated decor. As one of the few American families staying at the hotel, we enjoyed chatting with the British folks we met. They seemed to make up the greater part of hotel guests and we found them very interesting.
Room Tip: Get an ocean view room.
