“Looking forward to going back”

We've stayed here twice, both times later in the year. Being off season the place was never heaving with people, but I imagine even if it was the service and ambience wouldn't be much different. All the staff were very friendly and helpful and the facilities that you can read about elsewhere on this site excellent.

We've always managed to find some really good local restaurants in the lane to the back of the hotel, to specifically avoid the buffet evening with cabaret, the 'grilled buffet' (barbecue) and the carvery night. Getting into Funchal town is just a gentle 10 min walk and there is a lot of variety on offer. We still enjoyed a nightcap on the pool terrace bar each evening with the amazing views of the night and the cruise ships coming an going.

We would happily stay here again, and probably will ..

Room Tip: All rooms (I think) have sea view terraces.

“A Great Holiday”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 December 2011

Enjoyable stay at Regency Club. Friendly staff, excellent accommodation, super pool area overlooking sea & Harbour. Only 10 minute walk into Funchal town. Good restaurants nearby especially The Albert Pub run by Sandra from Manchester, offering good food, beers, and all the football matches. She even put on the final of Strictly Come Dancing. Well worth a visit to enjoy a drink or meal in a friendly atmosphere. Funchal was amazing with the town lit up for Xmas and the markets on main street. Trips about the island really good value. Lovely people and a lovely island for a memorable holiday.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking sea are preferable

“Dated, but Excellent Location and Fine Service More Than Compensate”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 December 2011

We stayed here in September and enjoyed our stay very much, largely due to the wonderful and helpful people at reception. At first, I must admit, I was disappointed when I saw the hotel, for I had originally planned for the 4 of us (me, hubby, our 2 young teen kids) to stay in an old hotel with much character and charm. However, when we arrived, the city had begun working on the pier, so it was way too noisy and we could smell the diesel exhaust. Next door was the Regency Club, and it looked like the only game in town so we booked it. The lobby looked dated and the rooms were a bit shabby. We got 2 rooms, but we couldn't get them adjoining so my husband and son stayed in a room with a good sized balcony, kitchenette and living area. I stayed with our daughter in another room that had 2 baths, a living area, and kitchenette plus a huge balcony overlooking the ocean. The balcony took some of the sting out of the fact that this place had no charm; at least we had an ocean view. Also, the separate bedroom provided a good amount of space and privacy. The rooms were very clean, and when my husband had a concern about a bit of mold on the window in his room, it was addressed immediately. The location was very good since there were many restaurants within walking distance, and it only takes about 10-15 min. to get to the old center of town. We enjoyed the pool area and liked that we could walk down the steps into the ocean, and that the ocean area was blocked off so it felt safe because you could swim without fear of being pulled out. Breakfast was good with the typical assortment of hot and cold foods, but the coffee was absolutely awful. Service at breakfast was curt, but efficient. I had to go the the hotel next door to get a decent cup. Joel and the other reception staff persons were just lovely and so helpful. Sure, this place could use a refurbishment, but we value a good staff, location, and room size more than updated decor. As one of the few American families staying at the hotel, we enjoyed chatting with the British folks we met. They seemed to make up the greater part of hotel guests and we found them very interesting.

Room Tip: Get an ocean view room.

“Great hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 December 2011

This was our second visit to this hotel and it continues to be good value for money and very comfortable. The location is excellent. It is close enough to the town centre but far enough away to provide a gentle walk in and out.
Breakfast is acceptable but never changing. As in most hotels, the coffee is horrible. Tea rarely comes hot enough.
Air con is inadequate but we opened the balcony doors at night and fell asleep to the sound of the waves hitting the rocks below and qenjoyed to the cool night air.

Staff are very pleasant and helpful especially those at reception.
We have already bookd to return next summer.

Room Tip: Sea view studios have great views and are good value.

“November in the Sun”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 December 2011

This was our annual November week and once again we returned to U.K. rested and refreshed. The "Club" was as usual the perfect retreat from the woes of the world. We tend to spend the day around the pool and yes the pebble covering is uncomfortable on ones feet and the umbrellas do cost 2.5 euros but surely this is a cheap price to pay to avoid sunburn! Our apartments are in the pool side complex, they are looking a little jaded but once we have our storage items in place its just like home!!!Joel and his staff, infact all the staff, go out of their way to be helpful giving advice re trips restaurants and the best shopping.

This time we found a real mix of prices in Funchal, we tend to base costs on the staple items required for a holiday i.e. coffee, beer and steak sandwiches, the variety in pricing was astounding, infact beer was cheaper on site.

Madeira and its people are quite wonderful,roll-on June
