We stayed here for 4 nights and were very pleased with the location - it is NOT in the hotel area to the west of the city, but just at the edge of the city itself. So in a couple of minutes you are right in the centre of Funchal. The hotel has a smart reception area and helpful English speaking staff. Our 1st floor room was fine, with chairs and a sofa, and a fully tiled bathroom with bath and bidet. The air-con worked fine and the very wide bed (2 singles put together) was comfortable. There was a pretty small balcony that looked over the street area - the balconies get bigger the higher up the hotel you go.
The breakfast were very acceptable, they rang the changes with the fresh fruit options and had hot items as well as the usual cheeses and meat. Coffee was strong - and you could also ask the friendly waitress for an espresso.
A real bonus, as I had been alerted by tripadvisor reviews, was the dinners served here. Their deal of 3 courses. 1/2 bottle of wine per person, plus bottle of water and coffee for 15 Euro was great value. The food was pretty simple, salad or soup followed by a meat or fish course, then pudding of the day. It was cooked OK but simple home style cooking rather than any gourmet pretensions. The Portuguese wines served, both red and white wer.e really very decent indeed. The restaurant, whilst loacking the buzz of a city centre bistro was very pleasant indeed, with great views of the Funchal hills and the sea. We had pretty full days so were grateful to come back to the hotel to eat, and not have to go out again. The little cafe within the hotel was useful if you wanted a snack, coffee or drink.
There is a terrace at the top of the hotel, with loungers and chairs, so there is scope to do a bit of early eveniing sun bathing.
Why might it not be suitable for you? It is not in the hotel area, directly by the sea and does not have a pool. There is no dedicated car park, so probably a bit inconvenient if you wanted to hire a car. It is a (fine) 3* hotel, not a 5* tourist geared establishment.
We really liked the hotel, and without hesitation come here again.
BTW we got a taxi to the hotel (they used a meter and charged 27 euro). We couldn't see the airport bus, which apparantly doesn't run that frequently, and not sure how close that would get to this hotel. We just didn't get around to working out which local buses go into Funchal.
