“Great hotel, poor location”

We were "sold" this hotel by the glowing tripadvisor reports so our expectations were high! We would concur with the positive reports about the decor, staff, food and rooms. We particularly liked the public areas which are tastefully furnished with antique and reproduction furniture, pictures and wallhangings, and fresh flowers too! However it does come with a couple of caveats. Firstly, we did not find the location of this hotel to our liking. We were on B & B, and the nearest cluster of tourist restaurants and bars is over half a mile away down urban streets, part of which have no pavements. We like to walk, but if you have spent the day walking the levadas or tourist attractions it becomes a bit tedious setting off on a lengthy walk again in the evening. We ate in one evening and the meal was very good, so I would recommend QSJ to anyone wishing for half board. Secondly, only the top floor has any sort of view past the high-rises and through the trees. The hotel does not advertise its views, but given that 90% of Madeiran hotel rooms take advantage of the magnificent sea and mountain views, we have to mark QSJ down. The hotel faces east, so don't expect to see a sunset. Thirdly, the facilities, while appropriate to a small hotel, are lacking compared with larger hotels. No tennis court, jacuzzi, small (though lovely and warm) pool for instance. So yes, a great little hotel for HB, but be aware of its limitations before deciding!

Room Tip: Top floor for any view, north end to be away from noisy road.

Thank you very much for taking the time to review the Quintinha de São João on TripAdvisor.

We are sorry that you didn’t find our location to your liking. It is true that we are away from the tourist area of Funchal but this has mostly proved an advantage to our guests who wish to get away from the “hotel zone” and sample the true Madeira in a residential area. We are 1.5 kms from the centre of town and are served by an excellent and reasonably priced taxi service to the old town and other areas where there are many restaurants. There is also the local bus which stops close by and goes into the centre. We are, however, encouraged to hear that you enjoyed your meals in our restaurant. We do our utmost to vary our table d’hôte menu in keeping with the tastes of our guests and are glad that our restaurant came up to your expectations.

We only ever advertise our rooms as having “garden views”. Our grounds, in keeping with the tradition of the product “Quintas of Madeira” are full of centenary trees and sub-tropical plants – these are the views our rooms enjoy. Guests requiring a sea view would be disappointed but we do have some magnificent views of the mountains – especially from our rooftop indoor pool. Once again, as far as our facilities are concerned, we do not advertise a tennis court but do have a jacuzzi in our Spa. At the Quintinha, the emphasis is on providing a personal and excellent service, rest and relaxation and enjoying all that is from Madeira - we don’t pretend to be anything like some of the large and often more impersonal hotels.

Yours sincerely

“Perfect holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

We travelled as a couple to the hotel for some R&R and winter sunshine and we had a lovely holiday. The hotel is situated in a fine old-established area of Funchal among older houses with pretty gardens and within walking distance of the town centre. It is itself situated in beautiful exotic gardens. It is a very well maintained property , tastefully furnished in typical style. Our junior suite was spacious and airy and well sound-proofed. The beds are firm and on request a mattress topper was installed to provide additional comfort. There is turn-down service each evening. The half-board option is excellent with no repeat dishes over the fortnight, well-balanced interesting menus and very good advice on wines. Nothing is too much trouble for the reception staff who are always pleasant and helpful. We explored Old Funchal and some of the outlying gardens with helpful advice from the Guest Manager The bar and restaurant staff are friendly and provide impeccable professional service - our favourite cocktail (not on the list) was mixed willingly and served graciously as was our afternoon tea on the sunny terrace (don't miss the House Blend tea flavoured with white chocolate and vanilla!) We look forward to returning to this hotel soon.

“A Relaxing January Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

Our stay began with an efficient transfer from the airport which had been organised in advance by the hotel. Teresa our taxi driver is an excellent ambassador for her island. The hotel staff, without exception were all very kind and helpful, and eager to help. Our room was very spacious and spotlessly clean. We enjoyed relaxing on our balcony as well as in the lovely hotel gardens and bar areas. Breakfasts were very plentiful and the lovely Inez looked after our every need. We only ate once in the hotel restaurant - our meal was pleasant enough but we preferred eating in the many restaurants in Funchal. A taxi ride back from town costs about €5. The steep walk back from town does get easier as the week progresses. We will undoubtedly return.

We are pleased to hear the your stay was relaxing – after the fervor of Christmas and the New Year, what could be nicer?

Our thanks for your kind comments regarding the staff – you are very right – all at the Quintinha are very eager to ensure you get the maximum out of your holiday, whether it be relaxation and pampering you are after, discovering all about Madeira or a bit of both.

We have it on good authority that the walk back from town does become shorter as your holiday progresses!

“Sunshine break in January”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

We decided, rather on the spur of the moment, to join friends who were holidaying in Madeira. We had our finders crossed that the hotel we had selected would be OK - we had not been to Madeira before. We were absolutely delighted with our choice. It was just right for us - not too big in terms of guests but with lots of space. Our room was quiet, spacious and very comfortable. The staff were friendly and very helpful and the breakfasts just delicious. The whole establishment is very well run and spotlessly clean. The location suited us really well as we enjoyed our stroll into town. We wish we were still there and hope to go again next winter.

“New Year Celebrations With This Oasis Maderian Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 January 2012

people found this review helpful

My wife Sue have just had our 12th visit to this fabulous hotel, this time we arrived along with my brother and his wife and two friends to a sunny and warm climate. We left Rosie Borges the Guest Manager to arrange our New Year Celebrations and what an excellent job she did. Rosie arranged and accompanied us on half day and full day excursions. Rosie also arranged for My Wife and I to be pampered in the Hotel's Spa with Pedicure's, Facials, Jacuzzi, Sauna and Massages. Following a sensational Banquet Dinner in The Morgadinha (The Hotel Resteraunt) on New Years Eve, Rosie arranged for us all along with other gusests staying at the hotel to be taken to the harbour where we embarked on a boat to watch the firework display from the sea. The firework display was the best we have ever seen and came up to the reccomendations that Rosie had given us.
Following disembarkment in the Harbour we entered a dico in The Fort where we danced and made merry until the early hours along with the locals.
All in all althogh our stay was short at the Hoptel only six days this time. We all felt that we had been there a lot longer as we had enjoyed our New Year Celebrations organised by the Hotel Guest Manager Rosie so much. The staff are tremendous many of which have worked at this Hotel since it opened, they are all welcoming, friendly and proffesional in the areas of their work.
Sue and I have already booked for a three week stay at The Hotel this coming August this time for a different experience to chill out and be totally pampered in this Oasis of an Hotel close to the centre of Funchal.

Room Tip: All of the rooms are spacious and well furnished with air conditioning

Thank you very much for the wonderfully positive review of your New Year’s break at the Quintinha de São João. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed everything we laid on for your enjoyment over this period and I will pass on your comments to Rosie and the rest of our invaluable staff.

Guests staying at the Quintinha over Christmas and the New Year favor the “house party” atmosphere that we are known for and love the fact that everything we do has a Madeiran feel to it. We are so pleased that we exceeded your expectations at this very special time – it was our pleasure to have you and your family and friends staying with us.

We will now look forward to seeing you again in August for a longer spell!

Kind regards

Yours sincerely
