We stayed at one of Quinta das Vinhas' self-catering cottages for a week in early October 2009 and had a great time.
Our cottage was lovely and quite well-equipped with wonderful views over the vineyards to the ocean from all rooms. The swimming-pool was well-kept and relatively large, the water maybe a bit cool. There was a basic cleaning of the cottage every day except Sundays and towels and bedlinen were changed twice during the week we stayed. In addition to that cleaning service, there were quite a lot of ants in our cottage which took care of the breadcrumbs we dropped as well as of the centipedes which had passed away in the living room. We didn't mind the insects (after all, this is a country-retreat amidst a farmed vineyard) and were happy that there were no mosquitoes.
Rolls for breakfast were delivered to our door daily and the supermarket in the seaside village (5 minutes drive) was open every day until 10pm.
The historic main house is two minutes uphill walk from the cottages and features very elegant sitting rooms (free internet) and guests can sign-in for a homestyle 3-course dinner on the communal table in the cosy historic kitchen. We would definitely recommend to try that dinner at least once as it was a very nice experience.
A car is absolutely necessary but the Quinta is very easily reached as it is close to the main road along the Southern coast of Madeira. Therefore, it's also an ideal starting point for exploring the island, but it's also great for just relaxing around the pool, as we discovered on our last day.
We would definitely recommend this place for someone who is looking for a tranquil place off the main tourist locations yet well-located for touring the island and we will definitely return.
