O Colmo is a large hotel and restuarant in the centre of Santana. The rooms are spacious and clean enough, with facilities like safes and hairdryers - but I found the decor and fittings a little dated, and my room had a broken lamp switch. The four stars definitely comes from the facilties - pool, lifts etc rather than the style of the hotel. I didn't try the restaurant but the breakfast buffet was good - plenty of variety. The biggest negative for me is the way noise carries throughout the hotel - every door slams, every cough from another room can be heard!

If you're touring Madeira and want somewhere to stay in the north, this is a fairly good choice.
It is a fairly modern hotel with good quality rooms with large balconies (though not a good view). There are some interesting antiques and art in the public areas.
There is a nice small indoor pool and health area, a good and well-priced restaurant and large car park. Friendly reception and good English spoken.
Although Santana isn't exactly Las Vegas - just a few cafe-bars - it's fine for a night's stopover.
The only reason I haven't given this hotel four stars is that the walls are a bit thin and there was quite a bit of crashing around in the morning, despite not many people staying there. I wouldn't particularly want to stay here if there was a big tour group in.
