“Another great Pousada with stunning views”

We stayed one night in this Pousada out of season. It is built on top of a hill with amazing views across the river estuary and the town, especially at night with the lights twinkling. The hotel has been built by converting a monastry and is steeped in history. We booked a superior room which was gorgeous and less than 100 euros a night for the 2 of us B&B. We also ate dinner in the restaurant which was the orignal refectory. We chose from the 3 course menu which specialises in local dishes and were extremely pleased. The service was professional and friendly. Highly recommended.

“1st stay in pousada”

We stayed in kingsize suit. It's really spacious and nicely decorated.
Hotel staff was very friendly and helpful.
Pousada is conveniently located on a quite hill with a view and is good to explore Lisbon area, not staying in dirty capital.
Take a boat trip from Setubal port (10 min drive from hotel) to Troya on your car. It has excellent white sandy beaches.
Free wifi in lobby area. Free carpark.
No spa and fitness area.

“Beautiful Castle But in Great Need of Renovation”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 June 2010

We have spent years staying at Pousadas in Portugal. Unfortunately, it seems that many are now in great need of renovation, and we were very dissapointed this time around. We arrived late night to Castelo Palmela. The elevators were broken, there was a very loud wedding going on and many flying bugs in the lobby. The bathrooms in the lobby were old and smelled. We were taken to see our rooms. We were greatly dissapointed in the rooms. They were musty and also in great need of renovation. The front desk was very accomodating and booked us at another nearby Pousada called Pousada D. Afonso II, in Alcacer Do Sal. This Pousada is also in need of renovation but it's condition was much better than Palmela, and had an incredible breakfast and great staff. I have to say that the best one we stayed at this time around was the Pousada in Viseu, great town, great staff and wonderful food as well. It seems that the Pestana Group is not taking care of the Pousadas like the Portuguese Government did, and they are waiting till the properties are very run down until they renovate.

“What an amazing place to stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 June 2010

We primarily chose this Pousada for our last night in Portugal because of its easy access to the Lisbon airport. However, it deserves to be considered as a place to stay to see the area. If you get there by driving through the town, be prepared to thread your way between parked cars on narrow streets where the walls of buildings define the width of the street. Even once you reach the castle, the zig zag cobblestone ramp to the courtyard where you park requires a three point turn to make the angle. Once there you have access to the towers and ramparts of the castle which provide views across the Tagus to Lisbon and on the other side, to the ocean and Setubal. The Pousada itself is beautifully furnished. Rooms are large and nicely furnished. The restaurant is quite good and the breakfast provided is the standard B&B bufet with the addition of good local specialities. We had to leave early to get to Lisbon and the staff were extremely helpful in making certain we were aware of the fastest roads to the airport and even got us into the breakfast room a little early.

“Pousada is Excellent Experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 September 2008

We stayed at the pousada the night before our flight home. It's an easy drive to the airport of about 30 minutes (not at rush hour). The hotel staff were very helpful with directions. When they found out the evening before we would have to leave before the restaurant opened for breakfast they made arrangements for the gentleman at the reception desk to prepare breakfast for us. We expected juice, coffee and maybe a pastry but he also made a fresh fruit cup, meat and cheese plate, rolls and bread as well as pastries. It was way more than we really needed but he had gone to so much effort we ate as much as we could.

We booked a suite which was very pleasant with a large living room, a spacious bedroom and a good size bathroom. The smallish windows had benches you could perch on - not real comfortable but it was nice to see the view of the village below and across to the river and Lisbon in the distance.

We had dinner in the restaurant. It's a rather austere room but the food was excellent although somewhat expensive. The staff were very attentive and even those who didn't have much English tried hard to make us very comfortable. The classical background music was appropriate for the setting.

Touring the castle ruins at night when they were lighted after everyone had left for the day was very pleasant. The narrow, cobblestone driveway up to the pousada, especially theblind 90 degree turn right at the castle is challenging. Our little rental Fiat would spin its wheels if we didn't get a good bit of speed up on the lower part of the drive - and since you couldn't see around the turn to see if anyone was coming it made it somewhat an act of faith to gun it around the curve. On a wet day with wet coblestones it must be really challenging. Certainly not a reason not to stay at the pousada but something to be aware of when first coming up the drive.

We enjoyed our stay at this pousada and would recommend it to others.

  • Liked — Castle attached to pousada
  • Disliked — narrow coblestone roadway
