“Great stay in Palmela”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 October 2011

We stayed here on the first night of a week-long tour of Northern Portugal. Very convenient from Lisbon airport. We drove down via Setubal and had a look at the Pousada there and thought we'd perhaps made a mistake in not booking Setubal. However, when we arrived at Palmela, we were not disppointed - the situation is terrific - high on a hill with a church and a ruined church in the vicinity and the public rooms arranged round the cloister - the restaurant is in the former monks' dining room. The bedroom was large and had small stone seats either side at the window (and in the bathroom) with excellent views across the Tagus valley to Lisbon. The Pousada restaurant was absolutely first rate. Palmela itself is a pleasant old town with narrow streets - we found a comfortable bar for a pre-prandial drink.
A very quiet and peaceful stay.

“Can't beat the view, but decor needs an update”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 July 2011

While the location is fantastic, this Pousada is in need of an update. The rooms are big, the separate bathroom was very clean, but the rooms have a tired feel about them. We were greeted by a musty odour which soon revealed itself to be a dirty rug on one side of the bed. Once the rug had been removed and the room aired the room was great. However, this lack of attention to detail is repeated throughout. There was free wireless, but the system that generates passwords was not working at anytime during our stay, so we could only use the internet using a cable in our room. We ate at the restaurant (you have to unless you want to drive/taxi down the hill) and while it was expensive by Portuguese standards, was still good overall and a pleasant experience.

Dear Guest,
We are glad you have enjoyed your overall stay at Pousada Castelo de Palmela and that you have appreciated the setting.
We would like to inform that we will take into consideration your comments on the next recovering plan for this Pousada.
The Pousada results of adaptation works of a 500 year old Convent, next to the Palmela Castle and Santa Maria church.
As far as the rug is concerned, and other details, we have already transmitted this information to the person in charge of maintenance in the Area.
We will review the contract for the internet service provider, in a near future, so problems like this will not happen again.
Thank you for your comments on the features of the room and on the experience at the restaurant. The restaurants of Pousadas de Portugal aim to bring the best of the regional gastronomy with sophistication.
Kind Regards

“Another great Pousada with stunning views”

We stayed one night in this Pousada out of season. It is built on top of a hill with amazing views across the river estuary and the town, especially at night with the lights twinkling. The hotel has been built by converting a monastry and is steeped in history. We booked a superior room which was gorgeous and less than 100 euros a night for the 2 of us B&B. We also ate dinner in the restaurant which was the orignal refectory. We chose from the 3 course menu which specialises in local dishes and were extremely pleased. The service was professional and friendly. Highly recommended.

“1st stay in pousada”

We stayed in kingsize suit. It's really spacious and nicely decorated.
Hotel staff was very friendly and helpful.
Pousada is conveniently located on a quite hill with a view and is good to explore Lisbon area, not staying in dirty capital.
Take a boat trip from Setubal port (10 min drive from hotel) to Troya on your car. It has excellent white sandy beaches.
Free wifi in lobby area. Free carpark.
No spa and fitness area.

“Beautiful Castle But in Great Need of Renovation”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 June 2010

We have spent years staying at Pousadas in Portugal. Unfortunately, it seems that many are now in great need of renovation, and we were very dissapointed this time around. We arrived late night to Castelo Palmela. The elevators were broken, there was a very loud wedding going on and many flying bugs in the lobby. The bathrooms in the lobby were old and smelled. We were taken to see our rooms. We were greatly dissapointed in the rooms. They were musty and also in great need of renovation. The front desk was very accomodating and booked us at another nearby Pousada called Pousada D. Afonso II, in Alcacer Do Sal. This Pousada is also in need of renovation but it's condition was much better than Palmela, and had an incredible breakfast and great staff. I have to say that the best one we stayed at this time around was the Pousada in Viseu, great town, great staff and wonderful food as well. It seems that the Pestana Group is not taking care of the Pousadas like the Portuguese Government did, and they are waiting till the properties are very run down until they renovate.
