My husband and I stayed here for one night on our recent visit to Portugal. First thing to note, it is hard to drive in Obidos and hard to find the hotel. Neither printed directions nor a GPS provide adequate help, and the streets are as narrow as everyone says they are. We entered the town no problem, but could not find the hotel. I called and we were guided through step by step. (If you stay here I would recommend calling for directions as soon as you get into town. It will save you a lot of hassle.) Thankfully, there is parking in front of the hotel. This is quite rare in Obidos.
Casa das Senhoras Rainhas is nondescript from the outside, but the inside is lovely. There is a pretty common living room and an honor bar. The rooms are not elaborately decorated, but are comfortable and designed in keeping with the area, which is more to my taste. The bathroom was quite modern with a good shower and plush robe. Our room opened out to a private patio, and we were given a decanter of local cherry liqueur and chocolate cake. Enjoying these on the patio was a great way to wind down from our drive.
The town of Obidos is very touristy, with one main street and a few ancillary ones, mostly comprised of souvenir shops and non-foodie type of tourist restaurants. Walking around town, at first I regretted having chosen to stay overnight in Obidos. Towns crowded with souvenir-hunting tourists are generally not my thing. However, come evening when the tourist buses were gone, the town became pleasant and peaceful and we could better appreciate how picturesque and unusual Obidos really is. And we appreciated that we were staying in a tasteful, pretty hotel that is set on a side street, close to the center of town but away from the crowds (tourist buses start unloading into Obidos early in the morning, so we truly appreciated the peace and quiet the hotel afforded).
I also must mention the restaurant at Senhoras Rainhas. This was such a pleasant surprise. It was certainly pricey for the area and we feared it would be a tourist trap, but it turned out to be one of our best meals in all of Portugal. The food was fresh, creative and well prepared, with an excellent wine list. The service was impeccable. Breakfast the next day was excellent, too.
All in all, I didn't expect much from either the town of Obidos or the hotel, but I ended up enjoying them both. If your preference leans toward the tasteful, understated, I would recommend Casa das Senhoras Rainhas for your visit to Obidos.
