“wonderful staff, good location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

My husband and I both celebrated birthdays at Aviz Hotel last weekend (February 2012) and were treated wonderfully by the staff. I had alerted the hotel prior to our arrival, expecting maybe a bottle of wine or some chocolates, and found that they upgraded us to a beautiful suite with a huge terrace. We were given a "welcome discount" of 10% at the hotel restaurant, and also enjoyed two glasses of complimentary wine with our meal. The service at the front desk and in the restaurant was exceptional - everyone we spoke to was really very sweet.

The decor is "old fashioned" as some have commented, but do keep in mind that this is intentional - they are very proud of the hotel's distinguished history, and have antique serving platters, porcelain, photos, menus, etc. on display. They still use the original silverware in the dining room, and the serving platters, etc. are classic and formal. Our suite was comfortable and huge, and the bathroom was modern and well-appointed.

I take issue with complaints about no internet - there is wireless in the lobby and bar area, but lack of wireless in rooms and dining area was a refreshing change for me. We ate and interacted with other guests in the dining room in a civilised manner, and were not surrounded by people fiddling on electronic gadgets for a welcome change. (not sure if my husband would agree, though, haha)

Only reason that I'm not giving it 5 out of 5 stars is because I think their heating vents might need a good cleaning: my husband's asthma was pretty bad at night, likely provoked by dust.

Room Tip: Bring your own hairdryer if it fits in your luggage. The one in the otherwise modern bathroom is on...

“Could be better”

Modern hotel built to replace a hotel with great heritage. Despite being modern, the decor is rather old-fashioned. The hotel's location is quite a bit away from the old town and the main historical sites. The need to queue for breakfast is rather annoying - this is mainly due to not enough staff for clearing previously occupied tables.

“well situated and comfortable.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

We liked the situation of the hotel. Rooms are clean and comfortable. We found the decoration was a little bit old fashion but correct. Bathroom was pretty modern. People at reception were nice and friendly. Not too noisy. A correct place to stay, though ain't the best in this world !..but we would return there in the future!

“Great hotel with perfect location! Can't wait to go back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

I stayed in this hotel a few times. The hotel is conveniently located in the heart of the city away from noise but close to all transport including the airport. Service is great, rooms are impeccably clean, roomy and comfortable, tv offers a few English channels. Breakfast is good, a few choices to everyone's taste and its replenished 1/2 way through, so there were never a time that they had an empty tray. Most of the personnel speaks English, they're very friendly and extremely helpful. would definitely go back with pleasure.

Room Tip: I stayed in different rooms and they all were good, especially room 804 and 608

“Room 404 Calouste Gulbenkian suite great for 3 persons”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

Within walking distance of Av Liberty, Tivoli Theatre, shops, restaurants etc. Hotel dining excellent, 3 courses with wine & drinks E120 for 3.Loved the signature suite Rm 404. 2 Bedrooms and a separate office, spacious marble bathroom. Slept really well. Very quiet. Public areas relatively small but pleasant. Underground parking. Staff efficient and helpful. Our son loved the Hard Rock Cafe within walking distance and the Gulbenkian Museum a E4 taxi ride. The Russian Ballet in the Tivoli Theatre was absolutely brilliant. Overall a great weekend spent in Lisbon.

Room Tip: Ensure you have a suite with 3 separate rooms, including the office as these are larger than the oth...
