My husband and I both celebrated birthdays at Aviz Hotel last weekend (February 2012) and were treated wonderfully by the staff. I had alerted the hotel prior to our arrival, expecting maybe a bottle of wine or some chocolates, and found that they upgraded us to a beautiful suite with a huge terrace. We were given a "welcome discount" of 10% at the hotel restaurant, and also enjoyed two glasses of complimentary wine with our meal. The service at the front desk and in the restaurant was exceptional - everyone we spoke to was really very sweet.
The decor is "old fashioned" as some have commented, but do keep in mind that this is intentional - they are very proud of the hotel's distinguished history, and have antique serving platters, porcelain, photos, menus, etc. on display. They still use the original silverware in the dining room, and the serving platters, etc. are classic and formal. Our suite was comfortable and huge, and the bathroom was modern and well-appointed.
I take issue with complaints about no internet - there is wireless in the lobby and bar area, but lack of wireless in rooms and dining area was a refreshing change for me. We ate and interacted with other guests in the dining room in a civilised manner, and were not surrounded by people fiddling on electronic gadgets for a welcome change. (not sure if my husband would agree, though, haha)
Only reason that I'm not giving it 5 out of 5 stars is because I think their heating vents might need a good cleaning: my husband's asthma was pretty bad at night, likely provoked by dust.
