“Ridiculously overpriced wifi is the deal breaker”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 November 2011

This hotel in Lisbon, close to Praça de Espanya and the Gulbenkian Foundation, is clean and modern. The rooms are fine, with nice bathrooms (coloured LEDs in the shower head)... The breakfast is respectable. The staff are a little businesslike but still nice.

Unfortunately, there are just a few things that let the hotel down. The first is the unacceptably overpriced wifi - €20 per day! (or €50 per week) - this is absolute robbery. There are a couple of very old and very slow computers in the 'business' centre which are free, but I found that they did not work well at all. In this day and age, such a high price for an essential service is simply not on.

Additionally, there is no iron available, or ironing room. If you want to iron a shirt, you are forced to use the hotel's overpriced laundry service. The beds are extremely uncomfortable and the pillows more so. You have to pay for proper coffee at the "inclusive" breakfast. There is a lot of traffic and plane noise.

If you have to, stay here, but there are plenty of other, better hotels just a stone's throw away from this location.

“Great Convenience and hard to Beat in Lisbon”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 November 2011

First, a caveat. If you only stay in five star hotels world- wide and won't accept anything less, mthen please move on; this review is not for you.
If, like me, you only stay in five star hotels in Thailand because they're ridiculously cheap there or when your company is footing the bill, you'll know what I mean by the statement that European hotels are over-priced, often tiny with surly staff. Yes, yes, of course I'm generalizing, but this is my review and I'm allowing some personal bias based on my experiences in Europe.
Ok, so now we have established that much, let's move on to Lisbon and Hotel Acores.
I' m attending a conference here and wanted something less pricey than the 5 star hotel venue down the avenue, so Hotel Acores fitted (yes past tense of fit is fitted my American friends!) that bill nicely. Nice airy room, with separate bathroom with bathtub, a decent size wardrobe, a comfortable bed, good individual air conditioning unit and a tv....well, it was a tv and it did have satellite channels but it was small and definitely not HD. No radio or clock radio, but I booked a standard room with continental breakfast. So far so good. Only the tv disappointed.
Breakfast was superb. Juices, scrambled eggs, lovely European bacon, hams, salamis, cheeses, fruits, yogurts, cereals, rolls, toast, tea and coffee and espresso can be ordered. Breakfast did not disappoint.
Location. Hmm, well, it's not smack- bang in the centre of Lisbon but it does have a metro station right by the front door and a one Euro ticket and three train stops got me into the centre of town. So ok, not in the CBD, but my friends stayed there and we'll just not go there ok? They had convenience and that's all they had.
So Hotel Acores what I would call a good world class three or four star hotel and it was more than satisfactory for what I paid.
Now, those who read my reviews will know I try to be positive and there's a lot positive about this hotel. But the bar manager/ restaurant waiter is not one of them. Surly, rude and obnoxiously arrogant, he lost my custom on the first night and I never went back. No loss for me as the avenue right outside is liberally sprinkled with small local cafes which serve unpretentious fare and nice cold beer and lovely local wines. So the bar manager gets a swipe , but there's little else to complain about here.
The reception staff were wonderful and were patient with my non-Portuguese and were happy to give advice on local eateries, bus routes and anything else I asked. Sonia on the front desk is a real gem and I have to say went out of her way to be polite, helpful and friendly. I hope management reads this and recognizes the wonderful front of house person she is.
Yes, now onto my pet hate- Internet in hotels. Yes, Hotel Acores DOES provide free Internet vouchers for use in their very comfortable business centre/lounge area. But if you want to use your own laptop or iPad, you'll pay twenty Euros for 24 hours. That is pure larceny! So use the business centre vouchers and make do. Don' t start me on hotels and Internet fees ok? Why do they think your laptop/iPad is a luxury these days? Ok, I won't bore you further, but geez it really annoys me!
So, if you're looking for a clean, safe and convenient hotel, close to the airport, with a metro station right outside (well underground) and fifteen minutes to downtown Lisbon, I certainly recommend Hotel Acores. Just avoid the bar manager and the wifi and you'll be fine!

Room Tip: Use the free Internet vouchers.

“Conveniently situated, but the beds are uncomfortable.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2011

This is a medium sized hotel, which looks like a small apartment block. It is conveniently situated right next to a metro stop on the blue line. It is at the end of a street with many banks, so it is in the 'financial district'. It is also across the road to the Gulbenkian museum and art gallery. The el corte ingles department store is a few minutes walk away. The desk staffs are helpful. There is a small bar and a modest restaurant, where breakfast is served. The choice for breakfast is good.
The hotel is very clean. The rooms seem rather small. Curiously, for a 4 star hotel, the TV in the room is not flat screen, giving a rather old-fashioned appearance to the room. There is a free bottle of water in the room, with a label offering guests free tea and coffee. However, there are no hot drinks facilities in the rooms. When the desk staffs were asked about this, we were told that the card on the bottle of water is incorrect and there are no free hot drinks: misleading and disappointing. There is no welcome drink or snack in the reception or room.
As the hotel is next to the metro, one can hear and feel the rumble of the trains passing underneath. It is also under the flight path out of the airport, which is only 10 minutes away. I was not kept awake by the noise of the trains or the planes. However, I suffer with intermittent back problems, and I found the beds very uncomfortable. My back pain recurred during my stay and I could not sleep. The mattresses are rather hard and unforgiving. They do not seem to have any springs in them or adapt to the sleeper’s body. I wish that they had invested in better quality beds.

Room Tip: They are probably all the same size, rather small.

“A good middle grade hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 September 2011

A good hotel. Very clean and the staff were very helpful.
The rooms are well presented and the bathroom was great.
It is next to the metro which is very convenient but you can hear the trains from the rooms and it is also on the flight path making it a bit noisy.
Breakfast was good.

Room Tip: Choose a room on a middle floor where the metro will not be heard and the noise from aircraft is not...

“Great hotel at a reasonable price”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 September 2011

Recently stayed on a business trip. This hotel is little bit far from the city center but thanks to a metro station next to the hotel this is not problem. Rooms are good and clean. Service and breakfast was excellent. Definitely I'd stay there again.
