“70s Hotel - Desparatley Seeking a Refit”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 September 2007

We were allocated this hotel by another which had over booked.

This hotel was staffed by people who don't know how to smile or talk to people. We talked to the reception staff on several occasions - not one smile.

The hotel smells like it needs redecorating - the room was clean but basic. The shower was poor - and had two taps with 'F' (cold) on them.

The breakfast room had a filthy carpet - I dread to think when it was last cleaned!

The hotel is not in the best part of Lisbon - a bit too far north. Stay nearer the centre if you can!

“nice hotel”

Nice hotel. Good breakfast, clean room, friendly staff, reception 24, free luggage-room for travellers. Pool is open air and situable only in hot weather. There is good "airplane wiev" at nights, because hotel located near of airplanes rutes near of Lisboa airport. But it is not noisy.

I don't normaly write reviews even when the hotels I stay in are below average......but this place does deserve a mention!

The reception was ok but thats where it ends, the remainder of the hotel was unacceptable. The carpets in the rooms were black with grime in places, and the matresses were heavily soiled. The bathrooms had cracked tiles and were in need of a complete re-fit, the bath would not drain away either.

Breakfast was basic but they only put out small amounts of food at a time which meant there was no bread or eggs for long periods.

I didn't think the location was very good, it is in a residential area at the the top of a small hill, you need to get a taxi or walk 10mins to the undeground station if you want to get into the main town.

“Not Impressed”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 August 2007

I would strongly advise against staying at this hotel. Whist this hotel is slightly cheaper then others that are more centrally located the slight reduction in price in no way compensates guests for the extreme bad repair of this hotel.

The hotel is situated in a quite back street that is neither close to the business or entertainment district. Therefore to go out for dinner or drinks you must use a taxi. Taxi’s are cheap although a crash helmet would be highly advisable.

The hotel itself was completely out dated and in need of some urgent repairs. The room I stayed at had dirty carpets (I think they were yellow originally) and the bed had several large red stains on the mattress. The toilet was also dirty and suffered from a broken shower head, the extractor fan did not work, the bath water did not drain away and the toilet only flushed every hour. Completely unacceptable.

The hotel amenities were also extremely poor and the so called “outdoor swimming pool” consisted of a small tub that was only a few meters in size. The “swimming pool” had also been neglected so was filthy. The only advantage was that despite the high temperatures it was completely empty – if you are planning to go for a dip I suggest you take full scuba diving kit to ensure your skin does not come in contact with the water unless you have a spare tetanus injection to hand.

Breakfast did come with the room but this was limited to scrambled eggs and a bit of suspicious looking fruit. If you do like egg its worth noting that this runs out pretty quickly and is not topped up when new guests arrive for breakfast.

The one plus was that the staff on reception were friendly.

“Hotel Amazonia, Lisboa - Definately one to Avoid...”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 August 2007

Depending on your reasons for going to Lisbon, you may get what you want, but firstly however, you need to find somewhere to stay. Unfortunately, one of my colleagues who shall remain nameless booked our hotel without consulting TripAdvisor first! I can honestly say that this is one of the worst hotels I have ever stayed in. Location: Well, its in Lisbon. What guides do not all mention is that it is 1mile or so from the main parts of the town (Bairro Alto, Chiado and Baxia) is that it is on top of the highest hill in the surrounding area, making a walk into the city a particularly sweaty experience in the summer. However, on the plus side, cabs very cheap, and readily available. On this point, all cabs are MAX 4-seater, and are all variants of Mercedes C-Class (Standard Euro Cab), but predominantly circa 1985, with about 1Million miles on the clock. We had a full on rear-ender in one, at about 4am in the morning, and were forced out in the middle of nowhere en-route to hotel, and most of the others had bits missing or fell off (window winder, which came off in my hand for example) - WEAR SEATBELTS!!. So what about the physical accommodation? Do not know how this place managed 3.5 stars. More like a hostel than a hotel. Initial impression of Lobbey conveyed a different picture to the rest of the hotel - do not be fooled by this in photos you may see. Once past the facade, you will find grubby carpets and stains in the rooms on the beds and general delapidation throughout. The pool is on the 1st floor (!?!) and basically a large paddling pool, on top of a 6ft high wood deck surround - avoid unless you are desparate, or your shower doesnt work - which is likely. To give you an idea of the bathrooms - in ours, the taps came off in your hand, hairdryer didnt work, air pumps/ventilators didnt work, well at least it had running water. In addition, the place seemed under-staffed (had to wait on average over 10mins to get to speak to reception) and the level of clenliness way below par. Example - breakfast (bit of a scrum for the mini frankfurters), we sat at same table 2 days running, and was clear that they hadnt changed the cloth, as there were stains from previous day (I know because it was an unfortunate accident one of our party had with an Orange Juice). Overall then, pretty poor and would advise spending a few quid more on a better class hotel, nearer the main parts of the City.
