“Not as good as it looks”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 October 2010

Good points:
Location — Just off the main avenue, public transport and shops at hand, nice walk to main squares and Baixa. Lovely little park just outside the door.
Service — the people at the desk smiled and might have been helpful if we had asked them to be.
It was clean, though our rooms hadn't been aired for a long time.
Bad points:
Tiny rooms. No door handle, Mattresses filled with firewood. The ground-floor room was damp with mouldy walls and smelling of saltpetre.
We looked at the breakfast and decided we'd do better at any of the nearby pastry shops.
Tips:
If you must stay there, choose an upper-floor room.
For 3 or 4 people taxis are cheaper than public transport for city trips.

“Good location - that's about it!”

Great location and our rooms were very clean. However, lots of things didn't work and even when we told the staff, they were not fixed. Our shower could not be fixed to the wall - so just a hand shower. One light didn't work - despite them handing me a new lightbulb (!) it still didn't and the lighting was very poor in the room. The worst thing was the beds. They were a good size but so hard that sleep was virtually impossible. The WiFi didn't work - and nor did the hotel's computer. There were no safes in the room and when I gave them my laptop to look after they just left it on the side under the bar in the breakfast/bar area. One of our rooms had two windows - but only one curtain per window so the streetlights shone in all night. We didn't have breakfast so I can't comment. It's a shame, really as if they spent just a small amount of money putting things right this could be a gem.

“Whats not to like ?”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2010

Excellent location : great room - plenty space , quiet location. There was some noise in corridors at night - but then ingnorant , selfish travellers seem to get all over these days . Breakfasts offered plenty of choice & were more than ample .And only a tenner in a taxi to the airport. It has charm & personality that is lacking not just in the 5-stars , but also in the cheap budget chain hotels . A great place to stay .

“basic, friendly, great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 July 2010

Initially found it worth trying to negotiate one of the nicer rooms, but we had a good room overlooking the square. The square is 100 yards off the main Avenida de Libardade, so we were worried that it might turn out to be noisy, but we had no such problems and this turned out to be a quiet place very convenient for central Lisboa. Perfect.
It's a 5 minute walk to the tram which takes you up close to the Biarra Alto. The tourist shop near the tram helps you out with tram/tube passes and well worth getting a pass. We found so many great bars and restaurants in the Biarra Alto area of narrow streets that we ended up there every night, always friendly and always a party. Definitely worth finding one of the locals' restaurants and queuing with a beer in the street on first-come-first served basis. The desk recommended a Fado club and got us in - one of the highlights of a great week in Portugal if a bit expensive.
This isn't 5-star luxury, but for us it was the perfect place to be to enjoy Lisboa.

“Refused to allow us to print boarding cards in an abrupt manner.......”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 April 2010

The lovely, central location is the top plus for this hotel. Another plus is the cleanliness. The beds are very hard as noted by others and the breakfast is self-service and poor quality. The light switch in our room dropped to the floor when pressed. The extractor fan was not working.

The staff were generally nice, except for the man at reception on our last night of stay. We realised we had forgotten to print our boarding card, our own error completely. We asked politely if we could print it off there, but quite curtly were told it was not possible. Nor did he offer any other suggestions. It wasn't a great problem really, but the way we were dealt with was unpleasant and unexpected.

We went up the street to the Sofihotel, and were treated with great courtesy there- many thanks.
