First of all, it's a pension, not a hotel. Paying 30 euros for a double room in the very centre of the old district of Lisbon at the weekend in summer when virtually everywhere is full doesn't mean you can expect 5-star luxury.

Having said that, it's across the street from the back of the cathedral (tourists all enter at the other side, so you don't get hordes passing by your window) - the cathedral wall really was 10 metres away from my window. The street itself is fairly quiet with almost no traffic, and the air has a (scruffy / faded) charm.

The staff are reasonably friendly - contrary to the previous review, they do all seem to speak English - I also heard one of them speaking French as well.

Not all the rooms have a private bathroom - you may end up using one down the corridor. It's an old building that shows its age - e.g. doors that need a bit of fiddling with the key to get them to unlock, and forget about any idea of soundproofing ! Room 208 has a basin + balcony onto the street but is right next to reception and you can hear every word they say....but, this does all lead to the sense of staying in an old characterful building rather than something in concrete + steel + glass from 10 years ago. There's a great cafe next door that does good meals

All in all, it's a high quality budget option. Not a place to take someone to impress, but if you're watching the pennies it'll do nicely
