“Great location, very pleasant staff, good breakfast... rooms could use an update though”
Just returned from my second visit to Lisbon and to this hotel (last stayed Oct 2010) - nothing has changed my view that Lisbon is a wonderful city and this hotel is overall a good choice, with many pros and just one con.
Pros - location is excellent, breakfast is very good, the staff are extremely friendly and helpful and speak good English, public areas are smart, cleanliness is good. Con - the room decor is past its sell-by date. Looking at some other reviews I can only imagine the higher priced rooms have been re-fitted, but last time I stayed in a basic room and this time in a second price-tier room (of about four or five price tiers, as I recall), and the rooms I have used have been okay but nothing more than that. Range of TV stations is good, there's hanging space, a safe, and enough room, but the carpet is heavily worn and rather stained and some of the furnishings look tired. I don't mean to suggest the room was awful - it was okay - but relative to everything else about the hotel the room was a bit of a let-down (though not a surprise, since the same was true of my room in 2010).
A little money invested in some new carpet and smartening up of the bathroom (sealant/tile grout was past its best too) would really improve the feel of the rooms, and would bring the rooms up to the same standard as everything else about the hotel. Nevertheless, I am sure I will return to Lisbon again soon, and when I do I will very likely also return to the Dom Carlos Park.
