We stayed at the Marques Pombal in November 2011. I would classify it as a business-traveller centric hotel. The staff was pleasant and helpful, especially at the reception.

Our rooms were modern, clean, and of average size, with comfortable beds, although the bathrooms were on the small side. The windows could be opened, which is rare and a treat! Despite its location on a busy street, it is still fairly quiet. The hotel offered free Wi-Fi, although it timed out quickly, which was a tad annoying. The breakfast room is in the basement and is quite small. The food is basic and below average (for this class of hotel and compared to other breakfasts we’ve had across the country).

The hotel has a nice bar but service can be spotty (you often have to go up to the bar and order your drinks, even when it’s not busy and there are plenty of waiters).

The hotel is about a 15-minute walk to Baixa (lower town) and there is a metro/subway stop right in front of the hotel (24-hour passes are great value and can be used on buses and trams also).

Overall, this hotel offered good value for money.

There's a subway entrance right outside the hotel (Marques De Pombal) and its in a really nice neighborhood which my husband and I felt safe to walk around in, even at night. Up the street is a nice restraurant (REST 33) and a mini mart with cheap water (12 cents/bottle) up Rua Alexandre Herculano. The beds were comfortable and room was clean and well decorated. Breakfast is served down in the basement and has enough variety to suit several tastes. It includes eggs and hot meats. The bedroom also has double windows which keep out the sounds of the city very well. Only complaint is the AC removed all humidity in the room and my husband and I both were extremely uncomfortable to the point we turned off the AC and opened the window instead. We live in Colorado USA where there is extremely low humidity so this was a bit surprising. Luckily the air outside was nice and cold so it worked out well.

The hotel has a perfect location for going anywhere in Lisbon. You can even walk to most parts of Lisbon (except for Belem and Park of the Nations areas).
The people at the reception are extremely nice and helpful, the restaurant is very good (good food, nice atmosphere, nice people).
The rooms are comfortable, large enough for two people, the bed is very nice, the room is very well sound and sun proofed (we expected to be noisy because of the traffic, but the double window worked excellent).
The breakfast is poor for a 4 * hotel (little variation, no fresh vegetables) and there is a lady who wants the customers to sit wherever she wants not where they want. The place is too small, but the opening time makes it easy (from 7 to 10:30).

We had some idea what to expect by using Trip advisor and Google Earth to get reviews and location, from the outside the hotel is unasuming but once inside although small in scale everything is top notch, we checked in but got our room changed at the last minute from 7th to 1st floor dont know why? they said it was a smoking room, I have my doubts as another couple checking in at the same time appeared to get our 7th floor room?? Later we found that the lower floors could clearly hear the metro trains nearby! every few minutes. The room was top class but small, no iron or hot drink facilities, there was a safe and minibar wifi and tv.
We were given a map and told where the best places were, not far from the hotel. 2 blocks away the Hard Rock Cafe a bit further all the touristy bits, best way to see everything is to get the tour bus 15 Euro each for 48hrs hop on/off, the bus you can get at the main roundabout 3 mins away. There are many sights to see in Lisbon and its a nice city.
Watch out for street hustlers/beggars. The locals cafes are fairly cheap and good quality.
All round a nice visit and the hotel is well positioned and of a good qualty and service, ask for a high room.
