“Great value for money hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

The location is great, close to the main street Avenida Liberdade, breakfast was OK, rooms were cleaned regularly. Nothing to complain. If you want a place to be for a few days while visiting Lisbon, choose Nacional. We were there for New Year's 2011/2012 and did not regret it at all.

Showers attached to the wall, no shower battery. Pretty silly, but managed to take a shower after all.

If you are not picky, you will find this hotel a great place to stay!

“Small friendly hotel near city centre”

We were looked after very well by the whole team. The room was comfortable and the bathroom was spacious and clean. There was a (rather dark) lounge with sofas and a large flat TV on the wall, which was switched off most of the time except when a trio of loud American women were watching VHS and screaming about Michael Jackson. The breakfast room had a bar in it where you could purchase drinks. At breakfast a very generous buffet, with self-service coffee, or else pots of tea to order. A shampoo leak in my suitcase meant my straw hat was damaged, and I tried to dry it with a towel, unfortunately dyeing it blue. We apologised to the chambermaid, and she could not have been nicer about it. The lady in charge of the breakfast room was also lovely. Lots of families and couples of various nationalities, very few business guests during our week long stay. If you need to use the phone in your room they have to switch it on for some reason. TV has various satellite channels, so always something to watch when you get back exhausted. The buses 709, 74 and 706 go from this road, so it is a good idea to purchase a travelcard from the Metro station, which is about 10 minutes walk down through the gardens. Don't rely on taxis, as they won't take you anywhere too far, too near or too uninteresting to them. However, reception staff are always happy to call a taxi for you, or to help with anything you need. Only noise problems were from bin collection in the small hours, and a group of US visitors who left their doors open and called to each other on our floor (and also some strange dragging noises from the room upstairs from 2am to 6am, but that was just for one night only). Really quiet and peaceful hotel considering its useful location. Also, location is quite salubrious, with all the shops nearby being of the Gucci, Prada, MaxMara sort of thing. Near police station, law courts and 2 pharmacies equal distance in either direction.

Room Tip: No street noise front or back, rooms have baths, try for lower floor as lifts are busy in mornings a...

“Excellent value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 August 2011

We stayed in this hotel for seven nights and ended up leaving quite satisfied.

The staff were very forthcoming. My room itself was very well-kept and relatively comfortable. The bathroom was rather small, but not uncomfortably so. As far I could see, there was only one accessible electrical wall socket.

The breakfast is a buffet of mainly fruits, cereal and bread. It's a fine breakfast, but don't expect any special treats.

They offer free and no-fuss broadband internet in your room. There is no WiFi, so bring your own short Ethernet cable or borrow one at the desk for free.

A word of caution: the staff strongly recommended (presumably on commission) that we go to a specific Fado restaurant. A quick check on TripAdvisor gave me the impression that this place was a mediocre and overpriced tourist trap, so don't naively assume that these recommendations are unbiased!

That said, Hotel Nacional offers you a lot for your money. The demanding yet budget-aware traveler should definitely consider staying here.

“Overall service great, some service disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 August 2011

We arrived by taxi early morning, 9.30am and our room was available to us, considering check-inn time is 14.00hrs. We asked if we could join breakfast to start the day and that was not a problem. Thank you so much for that. Room was fine. Breakfast was fine. Cleaning service from the rooms was fine. But when we had to cut our trip short due to emergency in the family the receptionist said on thursday that is was not a problem, the hotel was fully booked and it was not a problem to rent out the room. He was going to write a slip that we checked out upon check out, for reimbursement of the nights we paid for, but when we actually did check out the next morning this same man refused. He needed suddenly an email from our travelagency and other things. So this part of their service was really disappointing.
The matrasses mentioned, indeed very hard. But with all the walking we did we slept fine. Bring earplugs because it can be noisy sometimes.
The hotel is in a good spot to start wandering through Lisbon. Close to the big roundabout with Marquis de Pombal and the metrostation there and the big Avenue de Liberdad. Start of by taking the open air busses and take tours through Lisbon so you get an overview of Lisbon and what you would like to visit and see for yourself.

Room Tip: The rooms with 01 are separate in the corners not connected to other rooms or the elevator
