“A bastion of peace, comfort and good service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 March 2011

We have stayed at the Alif many times and are always pleased by the peace and quiet, immaculate service and clean/comfortable rooms.

The breakfast and breakfast room are a delight. The room is open and airey with a terrific view of the bull ring and there is certainly something for everyone on offer at the buffet style breakfast. Great variety of bread, rolls, crossiants, cheese and ham, pastries, cakes, cereals, yoghurts, juices and loads of fresh fruit....... delicious.

Location is very convenient being about 5 mins from the Marquis and Rossio and if you hire a car, the hotel has a very reasonably priced undergroung carpark, although the access ramps are quite narrow and challenging to negociate, even in a small city car.

Taxis in Lisbon are cheaper than the underground in London, so if your staying in Lisbon, I would take this option as it is so easy to get around. The underground is very useful too and very cheap compared to other cities, 80 cents for a single fare!

All in all the Alif is a delightful place to stay and you are guaranteed a very comfortable nights sleep before exploring more of the sites and experiences of the wonderful city of . We would happily recommend to anyone and in fact have on many occassions, where friends have endorsed our opinion...... great place to stay!.

pleasant, well kept hotel, breakfast was continental but had everything you could want, would stay again. 5 euros in a cab will get you to any of the main bars or shopping areas

“good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 October 2010

we were supposed to stay in lisbona for 4 nights but luckily we decided to book in internet only for the first night.
good things :
- the hotel is perfect as far as structure, cleanliness and room comfort are concerned.
uncomfortable things :
- the hotel is not in a walking distance from the center of lisbona so any time you go out you have to take the metro and if you stay out later than 1 am (metro closing time) you have to take a taxi.
- the staff at the front desk doesn`t seem to care much for you, not a "welcome, how are you? / how was your trip ? " not a "thank you for your visit / thank you for staying with us " when checking out. they did not give us any information on the hotel we had to ask fot everything.

“Good location and price, needs renovation, unpersonal athmosphere”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 October 2010

In a nutshell: good location, reasonable price. Breakfast, Wi-Fi and Parking are charged extra. Unpersonal athmosphere. Needs renovations soon.

Stayed at Hotel Alif for 2 nights at the end of a 2 week Portugal road trip. Disappointing when thinking of all the good tripadvisor reviews. Price is reasonable - payed 55€ per night, plus 7€ for parking. Rooms are rather big. I am not exactly unhappy with the choice, but would probably look for another hotel the next time.

Unfortunately the whole hotel has a rather rundown feeling to it - looks like the typical 3* business hotel wannabe built in the 90s. Not much has changed. Typical hotel carpets everywhere you look that hide the dirt in the ugly patterns as good as possible. The brochures remind you of what the hotel used to look like.

In my opinion not much money has been put in maintenance in the last couple of years - e.g. you can see all the dirty cables in the ceiling as the panels are missing almost everywhere. The dust there probably saw the last millenium. Everything is cleaned rather superficially - they mist some hair in my bathroom. My guess is that the owner's try to milk the cow as long as possible without having to invest.

Problem is that the guest feels like a cow lining up for giving milk - nobody really cares about customer service. I had to wait forever at check-in - even though some staff members seemed to have time. No excuse or mentioning of the waiting time. I was promised because of a mishap that I didn't need to pay for parking for one night - never happened. It was obviously on the bill. Also they give you a booklet with the details of your stay (rate, room number, breakfast included or not). Mine clearly stated that breakfast should be included - since I couldn't remember if I booked with or without I relied on that. After two days I was charged 6,50€ per person per breakfast. When I mentioned the booklet the unfriendly old man at the reception said that it "was a mistake" and I have to pay... end of discussion. All he was interested was the money - not my side of the story. Felt like I should apologize for staying at his place. Not the best last impression.

Breakfast is reasonable for portuguese standards. In general it is better to go to a local coffee shop for breakfast than to bother with hotel breakfast. Coffee is out of a machine, croissants are okay, fruit choice is banana and fruit salad from the can, only one choice of bread. Also they only serve one type of fake pressed ham and cheap slices of so-called cheese. Staff at breakfast is comparable to staff at H&M - not interested in the guests only in cleaning up after them and checking if everybody pays. If your rate includes breakfast fine - otherwise go to Campo Pequeno mall to one of the great breakfast places for a much better value.

Location of the hotel is good. Metro station is close. Very busy streets all around the hotel at the campo. Sleep shoud not be a problem since most people will be dead tired after exploring Lisboa. Make sure to get a room away from the elevators, conference rooms (we had a loud group coming in) and the outside ventilation trench running up the building (very loud until they turn it off at midnight).
