“Noisy and very old”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 December 2011

We went to Lisbon in October 2011 and booked three nights at Tagus Home. It is the most noisy place that I have been in my life. The floor is so old that it is not possible to walk around without being heard. None is at the reception so when someone phones, knocks to the door...they have to wait for ages and if you are sleeping, it is your problem. Apart from that, the place is quite clean although very very old. I am not a very demanding person and believe me, I do not come back.

“Get what you pay for”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 September 2011

We chose this accommodation because it was the cheapest option at the time - the rooms are basic but fine (a bit noisy if they're next to the street). Clean enough too. The staff were really flexible with arrival times which was helpful, although there isn't anyone actually working onsite, which means you can't get tourist info etc. Good location to get to the airport.

“It's called 'Home' for a reason - that's exactly what it is”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 July 2011

I stayed at this hostel over Easter period for 3 nights (end of April). As I travelled quite a lot, budget was important and that is why I chose this hostel as it was the cheapest option at the time, also offering quite a good location.

Tagus Home is situated very close to bus 22 terminus, which gives you direct link to the airport, very very convenient (about 20 minutes and you are there), at the top of Avenida de Liberdades, quiet and peaceful area, and Marquês de Pombal metro station is also very close. There are not that many eateries around, but a short about 15 minutes’ walk down will bring you to the centre, fairly affordable areas of Rossio with numerous restaurants and pastelarias (yummy!), night life, etc. Lovely areas of Chiado with more stylish eateries are also close by. All it takes – just stroll along green and leafy boulevard of Avenida de Liberdades and you are in the buzzing centre. I really liked my early morning walks there while it was still fresh and quiet and all the drivers not only will wait for you to cross the road but will stop and offer you with a smile to cross, which I did sometimes even if I did not need to.

Basically, Tagus Home is 2 flats refurbished into a hostel taking 1st floor of a 5 storey old traditionally tiled Portuguese building. Each flat has 5 rooms, a kitchen, a bathroom and a shower room, both with a toilet and a sink. It is not new, with all the charming trimmings of an old building like poor sound proof and excellent acoustics. It is kept clean, but the ceilings in bathroom and shower room are moulded, the shower room in the wing where I stayed was always blocked, I used only the bathroom. My room was basic, dated but clean. Fussy sleepers might find beds and pillows a little too hard.

I arrived quite early at about 10am well before check in time. A friendly Portuguese woman who speaks only Portuguese greeted me with a smile, asked me to wait a little. In about 10 minutes she showed me my room, the facilities, gave me a set of 3 keys (for the front door, the flat door and for my room), a Lisbon map, took the money (I paid cash) and I was checked in – nice and easy. In no time I was exploring beautiful Lisbon.

Now, things, which you need to be aware of. As a hostel Tagus home is mostly visited by youngsters, who can be quite noisy. If you are one of those, please, do remember that you are sharing your accommodation with other people, who might need rest. Like in some old homes one can hear everything what is happening outside of their room. Because of the enhanced acoustics a simple turning of the key in the door sounds as if it was turning in your ear, simple unwrapping of a plastic bag in the kitchen may sound as if it was happening just above your head. During busy periods you might have to wait for your turn in the bathroom, but you can use the facilities in the other wing. Oh, yes, another thing. If they still use the same kettle, please, do not leave kitchen until it’s boiled as it may not switch off itself and will boil water until whatever happens.

Lastly, if you had patience to read it all, the summary is: I got what I paid for and if it happens that I am in Lisbon for a short period and do not need much comfort I will stay in Tagus Home again. It’s called ‘Home’ very appropriately, that’s exactly what it is.

“Decent budget hostel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 June 2011

Good location, central yet quiet. Friendly owner. Very clean. Good internet connection. Pity about the creaky beds! I had to put my mattress on the floor

“Good location, good value”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 March 2011

I stayed here for 5 nights in August 2010. I felt that value for money is good and the location is excellent, with very good transport links. The facilities are good for the money paid, and seem to be regularly cleaned. The only problem I experienced was that the room I was in got unbearably hot, and with the window open the noise of the air conditioning unit of a neighbouring building was very loud. In the room itself there was only a small fan, which didn't really help.
