“consistent good value”

we have visited Estoril for at least 10 out of the last 12 years, staying
at Pica Pau with Susan and Alberto. This trip our flight was 2 hours late
into Lisbon but Senor Rodrigues was there to meet us as always.
Susan was in reception to greet and check us in (normally her time
off)
this is typical of the care taken to make her guests feel at home.
Most staff have worked there for years and remember us!
I have read comments about breakfast 'orange juice... but it is a
mixed fruit drink! breakfast, included is more than adequate.
Some correspondents don't appreciate this is a 'pension' not a 5
star hotel... it ticks all the boxes and is very good value.
What better recommendation can one offer but to return year on
as some say it is a short walk to the station for trains to Lisbon,
Cascais is about 20 mins walk along the promenade. there is a fairly new
minibus service to Cascais Shopping centre, 1euro each way!
this is the first review I have posted and I am glad to write about
Pica Pau We shall return later this year...

We have just spent 1 week at the Pica Pau.During our stay we visited Lisbon ,return EUR 4 each on clean frequent train.(approx 30 minutes journey).Walked to Cascais
almost daily (30 minute stroll). We paid EUR 65 per night B&B for 2.Excellent value
for money.Dinnners at Pica Pau were in a plesant cosy restaurant which cost EUR 30-35 for 2 (no wine). We had a twin room with bathroom.Room was clean and towels
changed daily.Staff were very pleasant and could have not done more .Breakfast was
the same each day .Cold meats,cereal.melon,rolls.toast yogurts, bacon ,scrambled egg
strong coffee ,tea and juices .OJ definitely not ok.The owner/manager is a very helpful
English lady.We visited the Casino (10 minutes walk).Very interesting modern set up
.We only tried the slot machines 5EUR minimum .Pool and its vicinity is very pleasant
although it could do with a little tidying up.(weeds growing through poolside paving and
brollies rather worn.We travelled LHR/LIS/LHR on TAP and only paid UKL 224 for 2 .
Overall a very good trip for a low cost.Would recommend both Pica Pau and TAP.

“cosy and welcoming”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2010

Had a week there recently, and yes it's not posh, things don't match and the OJ is dreadful. But it is charming, the people are all friendly and helpful, and it is very good value for money. The pool and the surrounding area are large for the size of the place. We were forced to eat in the restaurant more than we had planned as my husband had a temporary mobility problem - and we found the food very good and amazing value. Chicken piri piri for 8 Euros and house wine at 5 Euros a bottle, no wonder the locals go there.

“disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 September 2010

Encouraged by the wealth of enthusiastic reviews we decided to stay here on our recent trip to Estoril and were sadly disappointed. I would agree with most reviewers that the staff are indeed friendly and the rooms clean, however both the food and the hotel interiors left much to be desired. From the outside the building is beautiful and could be really fantastic, however as others have mentioned on this site, it is very dated. Not only that but it appears to have been decorated by a hyperactive enthusiast of the 1980s with no idea of style whatsoever. The chaotic mish-mash of colours, textures, tiles, fabrics, fixtures, fittings and faux-rustic elements made my eyes water. The breakfast room for example featured no less than 11 different types of chair. Wood effect ceramic tiles coat the walls and floors and our bathroom, instead of having just a plain white suite featured a mis-matched set of: brown bidet, beige sink, red toilet, white bath, 4 types of ceramic tile and different fittings throughout. If you have any aesthetic sense at all or love of simple good taste, this place will drive you nuts. The food was equally awful. Breakfast included yoghurt 4 days out of date, stale, cardboard-flavoured cereals and ersatz orange drink which had definitely never been near a real orange. For dinner I ordered duck and spinach (the menu looked very promising) and was disappointed when the duck arrived so raw it was dripping blood alongside a spinach puree topped with a raw egg. Unfortunately I could not eat either. Sorry to say therefore, that despite the friendly staff we were only too happy to leave the following day.

“Perfect place to stay for our local family wedding”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 September 2010

Very relaxing - delicious food in the restaurant - best smoked cod with oranges! Lovely garden and swimming pool.

More importantly, sitting in the garden you are surrounded by bamboo and trees not high rise buildings.
