“A Surprise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 August 2011

We boked the hotel because of the position on the way from Lisboa to Porto and it has been a very nice surprise : it's brand new but with all what u need , and its position in front of the cathedral is fantastic. Reception was very good by a very nice lady , the room was modern and clean.
We had also a very good dinner served by a very kind man. Breakfast normal .
We would suggest this for a stop in the area.
Of course we strongly suggest to visit the cathedral and to check if there is any concert planned in it : we had the opportunity to listen the last 5 minutes and it wa fantastic because of the atmosphere.

“Nice hotel, great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 August 2011

Our family of 4 (2 adults, 6 yr old, 3 yr old) stayed at the Mestre Afonso for 2 nights. The location is great right next to the monastery. We woke up, had breakfast and walked over before it got too crowded. It was an easy drive to other churches and sights in the area.

The hotel was nice. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The room was not super spacious, but we still preferred the "suite style" with separate living/bedroom area. Once we pulled open the sofabed, there was barely room to walk in the living room. It seems like it was probably one big hotel room that they added a wall to for privacy to call a suite. It was still fine for us. The bathroom was a decent size. The room was really clean, modernly furnished, well-kept and felt new. The bed was comfortable.

Breakfast was included in our rate and was a great way to start the day- scrambled or boiled eggs, cereal, yogurt, breads, cheese and meat, fresh fruit, juice. We ate dinner at the hotel 1 night and the food was good. My husband ordered the portuguese steak which had gravy and prosciutto on top, was overly salty. I had the veal chop which was good.

Batalha itself doesn't have much besides the monastery. We found a supermarket to stock up on drinks and snacks. There weren't that many dining options in town.

The manager/owner (?) recommended a little redwood "nature park" not too far from town. It was great for the kids. They had a trail with various activities along the trail including a water wheel, some fake animals, optical illusions, etc. It was free to wander around and a great way for the kids to burn off some energy.

Overall, the hotel was good, clean and comfortable. I would recommend it if you're looking for a place in the area.

“Simply what a hotel is supposed to be”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 July 2011

We've stayed at the Hotel for one night, and I can say that it will be very hard to find a better quality/price relation ever.

The Rooms were modern, very clean, and cosy. The beds were pretty much confortable. Staff was helpfull and friendly, giving us hints to the best places to visit nearby. The breakfast had it all.
The hotel location is perfect, just 100 meters from the speedway and nearby Batalha monastery.
If you are looking for a good and affordable place to rest while you visit the regions nearby, this is definitely the spot.

“Nice hotel and excellent restaurant in a sightseeing location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 October 2010

We stayed here two nights on our 16 day trip in Portugal and I picked Bataltha as a city to stay in because it was centerally located to see several sights we wanted to see on our drive down to Lisbon from the North. First of all you couldn't be closer to the monestary which made visiting it when the tour buses were gone easy. Second it was close to Fatima and Tomar and Alcobaca if castles and churches were your thing (which was ours). The hotel is recently redone and for the price (90 euros in Sept) it was excellent value for your money. They still have to work out some kinks like transfering call but overally the service was very good. The real surprise was the quality of the restaurant. Real inventive portugese fare.

“Renovation at the expense of comfort”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 June 2009

This is the former pousada hotel, recently renovated. Very well situated and comfortable. But it could have been better, if the renovation had focused less on design and more on practical comfort. Spotlights in the bathroom leave your head in the dark; there is almost no place to work on the writing desk, and no plug socket available. One evening the running water went out, after hours of noise from a throbbing pump (?).
