Our family of 4 (2 adults, 6 yr old, 3 yr old) stayed at the Mestre Afonso for 2 nights. The location is great right next to the monastery. We woke up, had breakfast and walked over before it got too crowded. It was an easy drive to other churches and sights in the area.
The hotel was nice. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The room was not super spacious, but we still preferred the "suite style" with separate living/bedroom area. Once we pulled open the sofabed, there was barely room to walk in the living room. It seems like it was probably one big hotel room that they added a wall to for privacy to call a suite. It was still fine for us. The bathroom was a decent size. The room was really clean, modernly furnished, well-kept and felt new. The bed was comfortable.
Breakfast was included in our rate and was a great way to start the day- scrambled or boiled eggs, cereal, yogurt, breads, cheese and meat, fresh fruit, juice. We ate dinner at the hotel 1 night and the food was good. My husband ordered the portuguese steak which had gravy and prosciutto on top, was overly salty. I had the veal chop which was good.
Batalha itself doesn't have much besides the monastery. We found a supermarket to stock up on drinks and snacks. There weren't that many dining options in town.
The manager/owner (?) recommended a little redwood "nature park" not too far from town. It was great for the kids. They had a trail with various activities along the trail including a water wheel, some fake animals, optical illusions, etc. It was free to wander around and a great way for the kids to burn off some energy.
Overall, the hotel was good, clean and comfortable. I would recommend it if you're looking for a place in the area.
