“DON'T GO in Winter”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2011

WARNING: DON'T GO THERE IN WINTER! Trusting the revisions read on TripAdvisor and the description found in Frommer's guide, we have booked a night in Casa Matilda (the 4 people apartment located in the cottage). Although at first glance what we read could have matched the place, we have been soon disappointed by the dark sides: at 16degC (heating was lit only after we got inside) the place was infested by spiders and and tap water went out 2 times (first time the reception was still attended so we could ask for help, but at the second we had to go to bed after returning from dinner without having even the possibility to brush our teeth). The last and worst surprise however was yet to come. Going to bed we discovered that sheets, blankets and pillows, although clean at sight, were stinking of humidity and age (as if left for months in the coldness of an old and not inhabited house), forcing us to spend coughing the worst night of our visit to Portugal. Very old bathroom with stinky towels too (always due to humidity). We deem this place could be very beautiful in summer, but for sure it is left to age unattended in winter... Good point: breakfast was very rich and tasty, even if served in a cold central house...

“Faded splendor with good location and views”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2010

Our room looked out across the fields to the castle. It was huge and well lit. Yes the beds are hard but we had hard beds all over Portugal. It's a pretty old house, and the breakfast room is very formal and lovely, with a huge and varied continental (no eggs or hot foods) breakfast.

When we arrived it was pouring rain, so instead of going into the walled city of Obidos we opened a bottle of wine we had with us and went into the billiards room and played a couple of games of pool. This was great fun and a wonderful way to while away the time until dinner. There's a terrific little neighborhood restaurant down the street called O Caldeirao, about three minutes drive away with ample free parking - if you stay at Casa d'Obidos treat yourself to a meal at this wonderful little gem, and don't hesitate to get the house wine!

This was a nice place to stay, although there are few things that keep it from "wonderful." When you arrive there is a faint musty/mildewy smell - not strong but definitely present. This is probably quite common in a house this old, but it may be offputting to some. I normally do a bit of laundry every few nights, and I had intended to do some at Casa d'Obidos, but the house was too damp and the heat wasn't on so there was no way anything would dry. Finally, as the weather the night before precluded us visiting the city, we would have liked to get an early breakfast and run over there before checking out (11:00, firm, no exceptions whatsoever). However, after we checked in and were told breakfast was from 8:30am to 10am, there was a knock on our door and we were told breakfast was full until 9:20am. This made a small mess of my day's itinerary, but they did hold our luggage (I try not to park in tourist parking with luggage in the car). So, nothing huge, but there is room for improvement here.

“Bucolic Luxury”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 June 2010

Ok, so the title is a bit of an oxymoron, but where else can you stay on a working farm with views and amenities like these? We were fortunate to have the former wine press/cellar as our apartment with a full kitchen, cozy fireplace, elevated sleeping area (on top of the old wine press) and a loft. The staff was attentive, helpful, and understanding and we felt as if we had a home away from home. The worst part of our stay was having to leave.

“Nice hotel”

We enjoyed Casa d' Obidos. The hotel is located close to Obidos with nice restaurants close by. The rooms were nicely decorated and the bathrooms were large. Breakfast was good and we were given Port and muffins upon our arrival. Although it was too cool to swim, we were able to relax by the pool. The staff was very nice.

“Not all that we expected”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 November 2008

While the manor house is lovely, there seems to be a broad range of rooms available, all for the same price. Room #5 needs some major updating. It's small, and the bathroom was very outdated. Bathing was an awful experience, as was sleeping in a small double bed that creaked with every movement. This did not work well for my husband and myself (seniors). The owner was pleasant enough, although not too helpful- not as we were lead to believe from reading reviews of this place. The port wine and little cakes were a nice touch in our room, but was surprised that this was a "first night" treat only (other Portugal places we stayed left the service in the room throughout our stay). We should have switched rooms when we arrived and noticed the small bed. The owner was willing to show us other rooms, but kept insisting that the one we had was really the nicest. We took him at his word - I had a chance to look into several other rooms not occupied and there was a big difference in size, bathrooms with showers, layout of room. Breakfast was nice, again inconsistent. First morning basic B&B fare, second morning we were offered eggs and bacon. Didn't have a problem with computer, even though it was in the owner's office. He seemed ok with guests going in and using it. If you get the right room and don't expect welcoming and helpful owners, this is a nice place and great for the price.

  • Liked — Location, manor house, grounds
  • Disliked — Inconsistency with rooms, service, helpfullness
