The historical building is beautiful, the amenities are great (superb swimming pool and good spa) however what a wrong decoration/renovation. This modern and simple style does affect the atmosphere and what could have been a great pousada just look like a chain hotel.
And what a ugly patio... it does look like an airport waiting room! 20-30 identical couches.
The restaurant has no charm at all (again all white...) and we could not even eat the octopus rice as it was more salted than the dead sea. Too pricy for what we given for dinner.
The staff at the check-in was absolutely great whereas at the restaurant they were not serious enough.

The pousada is large and elegant - a converted building where the courtyard has been covered to form a large lounge and bar area.

The spa is very relaxing and there is no charge for its use. There is a small but very practical gym.

The outdoor pool is large but somewhat in the shadow of the building for a large part of the day.

The town offers some facilities. There is a small but very attractive square with two churches facing each other. The pousada is about 10 minutes walk from the town centre. The town has a new shopping area for those interested in this activity.

There was a festival on when we stayed where there was large number of temporary restaurants offering a choice of good value food.

I booked a suite which was on the third floor in the extended roof area. The room occupied a corner and had a large wraparound balcony.

This is a new hotel in a renovated old hospital. The original old building is attractive but the new decorations, furnishings and roof are a disaster. Everything is done is an ugly cold soulless minimalist modern style which makes the historic building look cold and empty. Why go to the effort of restoring and using a historic structure when is one is going to totally invalidate the essence of the building with a radically modern style? If they want the cold modern look then put the hotel in a concrete factory or bunker where the aestetic will be consistent. Unfortunately, Portugal is crazy for the minimalist concrete box look and apparently everything-including historic structures-must be subjected to it. I wonder if it is a way to save money.
Obviously the hotel made a mistake because they are offering 2 night stays in a large double room for 50 Euros a night, when not fancy hostals are charging 40 Euros in Viseu.. Price is the only reason we might stay at Posada de Viseu, since 50 Euros for an ample double room with sauna-jacuzzi-pool-turkish bath-wifi included (breakfast extra) for a new hotel is attractive. Meanwhile, 5 minutes away, the traditionally decorated Grao Vasco,-which has not been renovated in years and does not include a sauna-can demand 75 Euros a night, because the hotel has not fallen victim to the modernist mania.

Viseu itself for us was one of our highlights of our trip to Portugal. What a beautiful town and a very wonderful Pousada. The staff could not have been more friendly and accomodating. Breakfast was perfect with a variey of food. The Pousada itself is fairly new and very comfortable.
