“Ibis Coimbra - a very good deal!”

Coimbra is a beautiful city in the center of Portugal, very known by its old University, and the only truly portuguese "students town". Very recently I've spent 1 night there, at the Ibis hotel, and would like to share with everybody this experience. The hotel is very well located, nearby the center and close to the Mondego river. One should known that almost all the nice spots to visit in Coimbra are located nearby the center, at walk distance, although to reach the University one has to climb a bit!
Anyhow the hotel is in very good conditions, it has an undergound parking garage (you must pay for it...but is worthwhile!), a restaurant (unfortunately I did not use it, so I can't rate it) and free internet.
In Coimbra you should visit the University (specially its Library - a must!), the "Santa Cruz" Church, its nice gardens and the "Santa Clara" Monastery at the other side of the river. One must also to try to attend a concert of Coimbra's typical music ("Fado de Coimbra") - I recommend the "Fado ao Centro" (everyday at 18:00, 10€/pax). For a typical and cheap meal, I recommend the restaurant "Zé Manel dos Ossos", located at the "Beco do Poço".
If you have more time, try to visit the old roman ruins of Conímbriga, located at Condeixa-a-Velha (at south of Coimbra, 20 minutes drive from the hotel). Enjoy it!

“Good Accomodation, Very nice location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

I've spend 1 night with my wife in the IBIS Coimbra last December. The hotel is in a very nice location, close to the river and walking distance from the University (beware, it is a short distance but a very hilly one) and also from Coimbra main attractions. My philosophy when we stay in an IBIS is: you (normally) know exactly what to expect, which means: A decent bed and shower, a breakfast and a parking lot. This was exactly what we received in Coimbra (for less than 80USD, breakfast and parking included). The only problem was (promptly solved by front-desk) that they don't have non-smoking double rooms, only queen's ones. So, if you travel with a friend that is not your partner and doesn't want a smoking room you either need to pay for 2 rooms or sleep together on a queen size bed :o)

Room Tip: Both front and back side facing rooms are quiet. Parking is cheaper than ouside ones.

“Central good value”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 January 2012

We stayed here for 2 nights on a trip from Porto to Lisbon by train. We walked in from Coimbra B station, it took about 30 minutes and was probably quicker than waiting for the connecting train from B to A. The Hotel fronts the promenade gardens beside the river. The rooms are IBIS standard - perhaps a tad faded. Even though on a busy road, when the windows are closed there is no traffic noise. We have found IBIS breakfasts in Portugal are not as good as in France but they are adequate. The Italian restaurant by the river, opposite the hotel to the right, was good. We ate there twice. If you have time visit the convent of Santa Clara a Nova - up on the hill opposite the town across the Mondego river. You can "do" Coimbra in a day and it doesn't need 2 nights unless you are on a leisurely schedule.

Room Tip: Even rooms on the main road are quiet with the windows shut

“Great Location and Value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

I stayed in the Ibis for a couple of days in January. The location is great being close to the city centre and riverside bars and restaurants.
This is a basic hotel, but everything in the room worked and the bathroom is OK.

The staff are friendly and efficient, although the breakfast wasn't too great (really poor coffee, which tasted instant, rather than real coffee). The hotel also has secure parking.

For a shorts stay it's an ideal place

“Passing Through From Losboa to Porto”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 December 2011

A little off the A1, this hotel is perfectly located along the river and close to all the action in Coimbra. Parking is available, at cost, for any traveller with transport. Both the train and bus stations are no more than a 10 minute walk.

The hotel is excellent value for anyone passing through this historic and quite lovely city.

Front desk service was prompt, efficient, friendly and helpful. Breakfast was the usual Ibis fare (i am not complaining as the offering is quite sufficient and varied) as available throughout the hotel networks other locations in Portugal. The rooms are correspondingly similar with sufficient basic necessities, a comfortable bed, fine washroom and more than adequate lighting.
