“Loved the 1930's Ambience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 February 2011

The hotel's location, on the Riverfront close to (but downhill from) the major sights, was great. Parking in the public lot across the street was safe. We loved the old-time charm of the hotel....it felt like we were in a 1930's black and white movie. The staff was excellent....very helpful. Breakfast was very good.....lots of choices. My only complaint was the slight musty smell that had me coughing most of the following morning.

“Charming old hotel on the river in the town centre.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 December 2010

This was a great value in the town centre. The hotel is vintage. The rooms were clean and tidy. The decor was nothing fancy, but were not bad at all. The bathroom was very large with a full sized tub. Our room was on the river side which can be noisy for some with the main street, but we had no issues. You can ask for a city-side room. The one negative is the parking situation. There are a couple of public pay-lots; one is across the street and the other is a block away. You can pay for a maximum of 4 hours at a time, and it is free from 7pm until 8am.

“Just know where you go !!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 October 2010

If this is the style of hotel you want, you will very much enjoy it. If not, it might come as a shock. In both cases, experience a time machine that brings you back to the 20ies. No detail seems to have changed since then. It looks worn out, indeed. But it is authentic.
When you arrive late in the evening, tired after an exhausting trip, the rooms may seem very disappointing, and you might want to leave immediately.
However, after having stayed there two nights last week, I must say this hotel is charming. You feel its history, its architecture, its interior decoration: it tells more than a story. It is clean, the staff is very friendly and helpful, and I enjoyed the breakfast very much.
Just try this concept of hotel: not top-class, but it tells you more about life ... and about yourself.

“Best Place for the Hotel Astoria, Coimbra is in the River!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 October 2010

Terrible hotel. My husband and I booked in a treat for our wedding anniversary but found the hotel to be very run down, shabby and dirty! The room was extremely dowdy and shabby and the bed was way too small for my hubby who is 6'2 and it also creaked and was very low down. We both have bites on us today so there must have been bedbugs or fleas in the bed/room! The furniture was all scratched and the hairdyer had dangerous wires dangling from it! The room was small and smelt musty. We had a room overlooking the river which was extremely noisy all night without fail with cars and wagons and buses going past all night and there was also 100s of students having a party close by and they were extremely noisy until at least 4am! The noise from the road in front of the hotel was worse than any we have heard in hotels in London and although there was double glazed windows they were old and blown so did not work at all! We did not have a wink of sleep all night and this is the worst hotel we have ever stayed in and we have both travelled a lot in the past both within Portugal and in the UK/Europe! To say the best place for this hotel is in the River is putting it very mildy! The receptionist was totally disinterested when we checked out really early in the morning to come home and did not want to hear our complaints! We completed a questionnaire and heard a lot of other guests complaining also! There was no bar in the hotel although it does state 2 but where they were is beyond us and the restaurant was shut in the evening. We stayed in room 403 and the shower did not work and only dribbled out and the water was very cold and did not heat up at all! We have taken photo evidence which we will be sending to our travel agent! This hotel is not worthy of a 1* never mind a 3*!! Least said about the breakfast the better but suffice to say it was awful and the hotel had no parking at all and we had to park nearly a mile away and walk to it and every car park seemed to have druggies hanging around wanting extra money to watch your car so we paid twice, once to pay officially and once to the druggies as we were frightened that if we didn't we would come back to a smashed up car! Terrible experience and we would not recommend this hotel to our worst enemy!
