“Feels like you landed in the Fifties!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2012

I had to deliver a conference in Coimbra and the organizers booked me in this hotel because they know that I love charming hotels. And when I entered the room 309 and opened the curtains I was amazed by the wonderful view and the style of the room.
It is true that the hotel needs some revamping, but it is a wonderful 3 star hotel full of charm and very friendly staff. If you like art deco style you will love the furniture even if the bed is creaky and the tiles are old. You will forget these small details when you have the beautiful view of the Mondego from the small balcony or when you eat the marvellou breakfast. The hotel is full of history, and I would return there altough usually I do not stay in 3 star hotels

Room Tip: Corner rooms are large and sunny

“Two Nights in Coimbra”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2011

This is a delightful hotel, in the grand Art Deco style. Our room was in the turret, thrid floor, with balconies facing the river and the town. Great place to stay. Very reasonable package for two nights and Fado Show.We enjoyed touring the University, plus the Fado show at the Acappelo Theater. We also visited the fasinating Roman ruins just south of the city in Coimbraga... as good as any ruins we have seen in Italy. They are not to be missed.

Room Tip: Ask for room in the turret

“Back from the future”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 October 2011

Having read the previous experiences on 'Trip Advisor' I still decided go ahead and book the Hotel Astoria - and was really pleased that I did. Character and charm exemplify this hotel. The welcome from the staff was warm - the room (although a little 'tired') was large, clean with a good sized bathroom, our room looked out over the Modego river. Although in a 20's time warp it was charming.
Breakfast was excellent and plentiful. The hotel did not have it's own bar nor restaurant, but being centrally situated they were all 'on hand' and this did not cause a problem.
It's location was ideal - 2 minutes walk from the railway station and main bus stops. One could either take some excercise and meander through the alleyways up the hill to the university part of the town or catch the little bus if one felt lazy.
Overall a good experience, which I would be happy to repeat.

Room Tip: If a light sleeper you might consider taking ear plugs.

“Old and drab but decently located”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2011

Probably one of the oldest hotels in Coimbra and it certainly feels like it. The location is great overlooking the river and a decent walk up to the university or to the town center. The rooms are spacious but decoration and furniture old and chipped. Matresses are old and creaky. Bathroom tiles are stained ...overall does not feel like a clean place. The staff is bored and while not rude does not go out of their way to assist. Breakfast was decent enough for a continental breakfast. Definitely overpriced.

Room Tip: Definitely ask for one overlooking the river

“Great location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 August 2011

We stayed in this hotel for two nights.
Location is great! You are in the middle of the lower town (restaurants/shops). University and Cathedrals are in the upper town. We took a bus to the Universuty area and walked down.
Breakfast was good (meat/cheese, scrambled eggs/bacon/sausage, jam, Cereals)
However my bed was only 1.90 meter, with a high wall of wood at the end. I could only sleep at my sides...
The lady at reception spook a minumum amount of words during check-in (<10), first this appeared a bit rude. But later I though she was very scared of speeking English.

Good hotel for a citytrip, but make sure your bed is long enough or pick another hotel.
