Hotel Beira Mar is a 3-star hotel in the centre of Angra near the new marina and with views of Monte Brasil . There are only a couple of hotels right in the city centre but major building work into the cliff face on the other side of the marina suggests new competition is being built.

We stayed for 4 nights in April and were initially given a twin room at the top of the hotel overlooking a picturesque sandy bay. Unpacking our clothes, we were shocked to find the wardrobe drawers covered in a white mould which, on closer inspection, also appeared in patches on one of the walls. Night staff seemed genuinely upset when we pointed it out to them so, with the offending drawers removed, we decided to stay put. In the morning the room felt very damp and, returning from breakfast, there was a strong damp / mouldy smell in the air. Despite being told by one gentleman that the mould on the wall "is not a problem" and "the weather's fault" we were given a different room without argument.

The second room was at the side of the hotel with a nice view of the street and the church but right away felt much cleaner and airier. Maybe it had been refurbished recently or maybe just not used as often as the sea-facing rooms but everything was in a better state of repair, less worn and generally cleaner and fresher than the first room. It had a light airy bathroom and there was more space overall. If we went onto the balcony and peered down the street we could even see the sea! Room service was reasonably priced and there's a fridge in the room for your own use.

Breakfast was good if you could beat the flies to the buffet. In their defence, staff seemed aware of the problem and efforts to cover things were made. There was fresh local bread, fruit, scrambled eggs, bacon, cold meats and cheeses, yoghurts and a large cake (that turned up on consecutive mornings waiting to be finished). Coffee was alright and there was orange squash in lieu of juice. All in all though, we've had worse breakfasts at 4-star hotels and the restaurant would have been a lovely environment to eat it in if it wasn't for the same Frank Sinatra CD being played every morning.

Despite our problems with the first room, I wouldn't want to put anyone off staying here; it's considerably cheaper than most of the other hotels we looked at in the area and staff were generally friendly and efficient.

I stayed here with my parents and had a good time. Azoreans were all very friendly and the staff here were no exception. Our room had a noisy but powerful airconditioning and a seaside balcony. The bathroom was somewhat spartan and at one point I found myself chasing a cockroach around the room at 1 in the morning when I had to urinate. That little guy was the only real inconvenience I experienced here though aside from a shaky, old fashioned elevator which spooked my mom the first time around.

Well priced, pretty and friendly place with good food in the restaurant downstairs. Easily the best deal you'll find in Angra do Heroismo.

The location was perfect, the room was clean, the stuff was very friendly (except of a guy at the main entrance) and helpful.
However...
We rented a car, but sometimes we were unable to stop at the hotel as they had parking only for 3 cars. It was inconvenient to park the car far away and walk back to the hotel.
The breakfast was all right except of the undrinkable coffee. But what we saw every morning did shock us!!! It was one of the personnels....one morning, while people were already having their breakfast, she was just washing the floor around the tables. Then, as soon as she finished with it, simply returned to the kitchen and went on preparing and arranging the food for the buffet table. Another time she cleaned the toilet right next to the restaurant, then returned to the kitchen......It made our stomach turn!!
As the hotel has its own restaurant, twice we had dinner there. Nothing special and surely not excellent as our guidebook stated it! But, the nightmare started with the pianist...we just couldn't believe our ears! So false, my God!!! We had to leave the restaurant earlier than we planned, because it was unbearable indeed!
The walls are paperthin, we could hear all noises from the other rooms and the restaurant.
The beds were instruments of torture, we hardly could sleep on them, we had very bad nights there! The cupboard was very small and one of its drawers couldn't be opened.
The wc didn't work properly, after using it, we had to flush 2-3 times at least...
We had mixed feelings when we left, but would not return to it and would not recommend it to anyone.

Just returned from Terceira, where I spent a few days at Hotel Beira Mar. Terceira is a fantastic place for a week long break, and the Hotel Beira Mar could not have been a better pick. The hotel ticks all boxes: location is wonderful (check the view from room 103), room and bathroom are very comfortable and clean, and the staff very friendly, hotel's restaurant is quite good and breakfast is excellent, with a good fruit-salad and some fantastic cakes.
