“Nice hotel shame about the position”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2007

September 2007
We have just returned from a week in Sao Miguel. What a lovely island. Nice to go somewhere that is not touristy. People are very friendly and all willing to help. Used MELO excursions and their staff were very good although be prepared to walk back to the hotel from the town centre if you go on some of the excursions. There is alot of building work going on and I am sure Ponta Delgada will have changed considerably in the next couple of years. The hotel was a bit far out of the town centre for us and it would have been nice to have courtesy buses to town and the beach. Going into town is ok but it is a steep hill coming back. Hotel was very clean and modern. No night life. Food was very disappointing. Suggest trying the Chinese restuarant near the supermarket - excellant food and friendly staff.

“VIP Executive for Holiday”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 August 2007

The Holiday was booked via an agent from the UK. I looked at the web site for the Hotel and thought it looked to be a high class Hotel which was new and clean.
First impressions - the location is a little disappointing - on a busy roundabout. It is about 15 mins walk to the harbour and a bit further into town but there are buses and taxis all the time.
The Hotel is very modern and spacious with a bar and restaurant downstairs and another restaurant upstairs. The spa is on the ground floor.
The room was as new with a sea view and a really modern clean bathroom with a fantastic shower.
We tried both the buffet restaurant and the a la carte.
Breakfast is always a buffet. I thought it had a really good choice but they need to get some fresh coffee, the machines are awful. It is like a lot of Hotels trying to please different cultures - the continental stuff was great, bread, pastries, cheese etc - but if you want a full english you will have to learn to love hot dog sausages I'm afraid.
The evening buffet food was really good but I felt that some of the dishes could have been refreshed for the later arrivals for example some of the vegetables ran out and weren't replaced. Excellent value with three courses for about £10. Wine is good value with local wine being about £5 a bottle. Terres de Lava is one of the best white wines I have ever had so stock up at the airport as well. (only £3 !!)
The a la carte was a much better experience. Really good service and food. Obviously more expensive here though.
For vegetarians choice is a little limited and I ordered an aubergine and cheese dish which unexpectedly had lots of ham in it !!! Fish is great though.
The indoor pool is not huge but was mostly empty - the jacuzzis and relaxation area are lovely and always quiet.
For sunbathing there is an upstairs deck area with small plunge pool. Nice but they really need to add a drinks serivce -we had to go up and down in the lift to the bar which is honestly not what I expected from a 4* Hotel. On a general note they do seem to be a bit light on staff and be prepared to wander into the kitchen to find someone to serve you at the bar occasionally !!!
The staff are all friendly though and always polite.
A couple of other points, there are not a lot of children at the Hotel and as the rooms are all high up with balconies and there isn't really an outdoor pool area so I wouldn't choose this Hotel if you have children. It's also a nice quiet hotel so expect a good nights sleep!
Overall a well run, clean and modern Hotel, could be seen as slightly impersonal / business like but obviously that depends on your taste.

“VIP Azores Hotel - feels like a business hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 June 2006

This feels very much like a business hotel. Reception staff are pleasant and rooms are comfortable. Breakfast was a horrendous mess (of food and people). No organisation and it was the ubiquitous BUFFET! The quality of food was dreadful. Tinned fruits, JELLY (!) bad coffee, plastic cheese. It was horrible. Cornflakes spilled everywhere, coffee cups left unwashed. YUK.
We used the gym and were disappointed to find that guests of the hotels were required to pay to hire towels. The towels were necessary for using the weight machines.
A four staff hotel does not make their guests pay for hiring towels for their facilities!!
PS If a manager reads this please tell him to inform housekeeping staff not to leave clean towels in the guests' bidet!
