just spent 5 nights here. On checkin we were assigned to a room in the old wing -- dark, dirty carpet, balcony so small only one person could stand on it and a view over the restaurant roof with dirty pipes and AC units and the room opposite --- for this I paid 170 euro . Told there were no better rooms at the same rate ( although the place was almost empty ) . Was shown a garden view room with balcony but that cost us 20 euro per night more.
There was a beautiful dining room , (breakfast was included, )with linen table ware. Breakfast was basically the same every day ( scrambled or boiled egg, bacon, various breads or pastries , yoghurt, cold meat and cheese and fresh fruit ). There was a excellent maitre'd who , after I complimented him on the " bird of paradise " folded napkins came to my table each morning with 2 fresh napkins and proceeded to teach me a new napkin fold every day -- bird of paradise, bishops mitre, star .................. They also served the local bolo levedo that were light and tasty and they also had ( for 23 euro ) cozida -- the local stew cooked underground in the hot thermal soil by the lake .
But--- what was lacking ? Well--- if you wanted internet in your room you paid extra and it was pricey. There were computers in the lobby and you could get a free half hour ticket to use thhem. There was no room service that we found. Therre was no frig or mini bar if you wanted to keep anything cool. There was no ice machine or ice bucket anywhere. The TV was the smallest I've seen -- about 12 inches across. If you wanted to swim in the thermal indoor or wonderful hot ( over 100 degrees ) thermal outdoor pool you had to pay for towels and if you wanted them you paid for robes. Table tennis you paid. So everything was extra,
The dining room had some a la carte items for dinner or a 24 euro fixed meal --- we ate in local cafes but the hotel seemed full of lunchers and diners from the dozens of people who arrive on Furnas thermal area tours from elsewhere on the island or on tour excursions from cruise ships ( last week we saw 10 coaches circling the one way system as their passengers enjoyed the sights ) . This hotel is the only place in town big enough to handle the volume of people on tours ( its the only place in town period ) so I suppose that is how they make their money .
The hotel opens onto the Terra Nostra gardens so you can wander there for free. It is however only 5 euro go go in the gardens if you are not a guest.
On a fine day this place is OK. We had 2 days out of 5 when it just poured all day and the clouds were down so it was fairly grim

Room Tip: make sure you ask for a room facing the garden and not in the Art Deco wing
