“Great golf break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

Went out with a group of 16 for 3 days of golf. Was a really enjoyable stay check in was relatively smooth, rather disappointing that course/pool view rooms were not given as the hotel was quite due to the time of the year 1 member of the group was charged 60e for a course view and had a room overlooking 18th green. Can understand in peak times but why have people over looking main road when equal quality rooms with a view are available. The rooms and inside of the hotel are very nice, with mini bars, tea coffee machines and large LCD TV, balcony. The public areas in the hotel are very well maintained and relaxing have a nice snooker table and sports bar. Beers are about 5e a pint but there is a good choice of drinks we headed to a town called Alvor which was 8e in taxi and could get beers from 1.80e to 3e a pint and a curry, Portuguese steak, steak on a stone for 10e-15e a head. Breakfasts were fantastic but will say given the abundance of oranges growing in the area to use concentrated style orange and not fresh is not good. The golf courses were absolutely fantastic played 2 times on championship and one on the practice course all were great and the golf club is great clubs are stored there so you don't need to carry them back to room etc and clubs and shoes are cleaned overnight for you which is a nice touch. Trolly rental was 6e, buggy 45e and 50 golf balls at range 6e. Wifi was chargeable in room and public areas which was a shame and no water in room unless you are a meridian member, petrol station 500m down the road selling water for 1e a bottle beats the 4e at hotel. All in all a great stay people at the hotel are very friendly and will do anything they can to make your stay relaxing opening doors, coffee top ups, smooth check out etc. Really relaxing stay and can defiantly say I would recommend.

Dear Guest,

We read your review, and are very happy to know that you enjoyed your time at LM Penina, you found the staff very helpful and friendly, the golf course was in excellent conditions, the rooms were well equipped and the local area was worth visiting.

I am most excited to inform you that very recently we have been able to improve our internet access alternatives, and we now offer free wifi in our restaurants, and Business Centre.

We have also noted your suggestions and comments on the areas of our operation that need improvement, and this is a valuable feedback for us.

Hope you will come back soon, for another great golf break,

Kind regards

“Excellent Choice”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

Myself and three friends booked this hotel for four nights bed and breakfast with four rounds on the Championship Course and all of this for 219 pds - what a great deal for what is a great hotel and golf course. The hotel has a relaxed feel about it in all areas, yes it was perhaps a bit quieter than what you would expect in mid summer however I can't see it being anything else than a place where you can relax in lovely surroundings. The pool and grounds are simply beautiful. We arrived slightly late on our first day and only managed nine of our expected eighteen holes however the friendly staff at the pro shop rather than allow us to play the second nine on what was our last day with no golf originally planned insisted we play the full eighteen. What a bonus that was. I can't speak highly enough for the whole set up, from the comfort of the hotel, to the gounds, the golf course and in particular the staff everywhere. They are a credit to the management. For golfers reading this review the golf course is very challenging however very enjoyable and the greens are quite simply the best I have putted on for some time and that includes Gleneagles at its best.

Room Tip: We had a mountain view however our other friends had a pool/golf course view which was stunning.

“Christmas and birthday celebration”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

we have stayed a number of times in this hotel and it never lets us down, the overall experience is simply excellent, from the moment we book in, to the golf and dinning and friendliness of all the staff.
we celebrated my wife's 60th birthday when we were there and the hotel surprised us with a cake and a glass of champagne in the restaurant, which was a lovely touch and very much appreciated .
we look forward to returning very soon.

Room Tip: pool view rooms are lovely

“Great service and great pool”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

This is a very nice hotel, depending on want you want to do. For us it was go to the beach in the morning, go to the pool in the afternoon and have dinner at the perfect Buganvilia restaurant in the nearby vila of Alvor. We were there for 4 nights and actually extended for one more night as we were feeling so very well treated. The hotel is right near one the highway exits so very easy to access, but a little bit far, of course, from the beach. There is a free shuttle that takes you to the beach though where you have access to towels.

The standard rooms are a bit on the small size (maybe 22m2 ours) and we ended up changing rooms because the one we had and apparently most of the standard ones with only one queen size bed are connecting so we had children crying and running the first day of our stay. Since we wanted privacy and quiet they let us change which was nice and much more convenient to a studio room on the top floor.

What we enjoyed the most was the breakfast, the room had lots of light and space and the food was fresh and tasty. The only minor was that I felt they could've included more portuguese pastry which is so rich into the buffet menu. There was one portuguese pastry per day but after the third day it was always the same two kinds rotating. It is really just a detail since I feel it's a missed oportunity to showcase what we do so well in Portugal.

In general, I'd recommend this hotel to people who want to golf but also for couples if you stay in a more private room and for families because the pool is just enormous and so delightful that I couldn't get out.

Room Tip: If with family they have connecting rooms, if with partner maybe try to chose a room on the top floo...

“Relaxing, friendly 5* hotel with good golf at a fair price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

people found this review helpful

Every few years we try a different hotel and golf courses in the Algarve but we always return to Penina. Most of the staff have been there for years and they really do seem to care about their guests. The rooms and facilities are quite acceptable for a 5* hotel and the traditional style of the place actually makes it feel more homely, informal and relaxed than some of the newer glitzy alternatives.

The golf course is like an English course so it's perfect for winter golf. Quite long and challenging - especially for ladies - but you don't need a buggy to get round it, the first tee is right outside the hotel and, as a resident it doesn't cost 80+ euros a round.

Signing up for the hotel's 'meal deal' makes the cost of a three course dinner in one of the hotels restaurants around 30 euros, a fair price for the quality and again, no need to drive.

Ifyou want a relaxing, friendly 5* golfing holiday then you should go to Penina - nowhere else in the Algarve beats it for quality and price.

Room Tip: Pay the supplement to get a golf course view
