“Short trip to Lagos, Portugal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

We stayed at the Casa da Moura Hotel in the old part of Lagos. Lovely old building, great staff, pleasant pool and patio, 3 mins walk into the heart of the old town, quiet.

The breakfast is included in the room rate and was very good. It is on the roof terrace.
That is the only meal available.

We stayed in the Fez room. A great suite except the bathroom was very dated and needs a good clean out. Otherwise, big comfortable rooms, nice balcony and views.

Free parking in the small square a few yards away.

This was our base while looking at property in Lagos and worked out very well.
Free WiFi in the room to get on the internet easily for research, photos and emails.

After a day of running around it was nice to drop off everything in the room and just walk into town to look around and have Dinner. Lagos is a beautiful town and everyone was very friendly and helpful.

The room rate was very good. (Jan 2012)

Room Tip: We liked the Fez room, which looks over the patio and pool. It was big, sunny and quiet.

“Fantastic”

I can't rate this hotel highly enough. I's like stepping into another world somewhere in the past. Full of atmosphere. The breakfast is sensational, just don't try to count the menu choices. Beautiful courtyard, sunny balconies at the back with views of the medieval walls and bastions and on top an amazing Moorish style flat-roof area. Best place we've stayed for a long time.

Room Tip: Balconies on the upstairs rooms at the back are great for views and sun.

“Perfect (affordable) Getaway!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 November 2011

We recently stayed here for 5 nights (planned 4 but didn't want to leave!). From the moment we walked in the staff were nothing but hospitable and were always helpful if needed. Luis was great with pointing us in the right directions for delicious meals and buses to other towns in the Algarve.

We showed up about 2 hours before the stated check-in but we were able to check-in to our room right away. We were given a ground floor suite that opened onto the pool (literally) and terrace. We couldn't believe our £50/night got us such a nice room! There was water/wine and fruit waiting for us in the room which was such an nice touch after a long drive from Faro.

The room was so clean and constantly kept up during our stay. We could not have been more impressed!

Now, the best part, the breakfasts! The rooftop terrace where breakfast is served is so nice and a perfect way to start the day! Loved the fruits, pastries, cheese and meats buffet and the eggs-to-order were delicious! By about 2pm of each day I was already looking forward to the next day's meal!

The wifi was strong and easy to use, and the hotel still prefers visitors to pay in cash but they are able to accept credit cards now.

Location wise it was perfect for being in the old town of Lagos and just a short walk to the beaches, restaurants, marina and grocery (Spar). We also had a great jog from the hotel along the beaches one morning. Highly recommended! It's easy to find too if you're coming via car transfer (just inside the main gate) and or the bus (a 10 minute walk through the town).

The hotel would be great for young couples or friends, especially in off-season when the prices are a great value.

Room Tip: The rooms on the ground floor are amazing as they open to the pool and terrace. The hotel was quiet...

“Excellent!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 September 2011

We recently stayed here for 6 nights.

Emailconversations about the reservation and a transfer with Luis were quick and easy.
I had specifically asked the apartment above the pool since this one (and the one next to it) had a nice balcony with lots of sunshine during the day and early evening. This one is called Fez. The rooms at the ground floor did not appeal to me because you have no private sitting area there and the rooms at the front might a be a bit noisy and their balcony is in the shade for most of the day.

It is located up in the village of Lagos. So coming in you have to do a little climbing. About 5-10 minutes from the waterfront.

There were a couple of bottles of water and wine when we arrived and some fresh fruit.

The size of the apartment and the decorations were really terrific. From the photo's it is difficult to see the size since most are close-ups, but the living area and kitchen are really large. The bathroom is maybe a bit small but not a problem. The bedroom is a good size.
The kitchen of this apartment has no cooking facilities. Other apartments do have them. For us this was not a problem since we did plan to cook. We used the fridge for drinks and snacks.

The decorations through out are nice wooden furniture and beautiful Moroccan (tiled) decorations. We loved it.

There is airconditioning in the living room. We only used it a couple of times.

The apartment was cleaned every day and the maid also did the dishes (which was a good thing because there were no cleaning products).

The pool is not really large but great for cooling off. There are comfortable deckchairs and umbrella's.

The real bonus of this apartmentbuilding is the roofterrace and breakfast. The roofterrace has some nice seats and has a beautiful view over Lagos. We used it to have a last coffee at breakfast and also some evenings to have a drink and look at the view.

The breakfast is served on this roofterrace in a covered area and also has Maroccan decorations. The breakfast itself is buffet style and really really good. Better than at most chainstyle hotels. All the products are fresh. There is fresh fruit, you can squeeze your own orange juice, there are cereals and yoghurts. They bake (off) lots of nice bread and pastries (mini croissants, mini pecan pastries, etc.). There are about 6 sorts of cheese and 6 sorts of meat. There is coffee and tea and you can ask one of the girls to make you a Nespresso. On top of all that there is a list of egg dishes you can choose from every day. The girls that organise the breakfast are very friendly.

We had booked a transfer with Luis and he was right on time and drove us safely to the airport in 45-60 minutes. Because we had a late flight we could stay in the apartment until 3 in the afternoon which was really nice.

Room Tip: room Fez is above the pool with a private balcony that is in the sun until it goes under.

“What a great find, so charming and discreet !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2011

We found this place on Trip Advisor. It is a lovely old town house at the very top of the Old Town within the city wall . If you walked past it, you may admire its rustic appearance but unless you look carefully it does not look like a hotel. The hotel has 8 large apartments over 2 floors all decorated in a sort of gothic moorish style. I thought it very atmospheric with a large living room/kitchenette and very adequate and efficient fridge and an electric hob. There is loads of storage for clothes.

Contrary to some previous reviews we found the beds excellent and with shutters on the window guaranteed a really perfect night's sleep.

The breakfast is served on the roof terrace and the choice is excellent. It may look initially like yet another continental breakfast; don't be deceived as the bread is fresh and the
cheeses are extremely good. They keep all cold hams etc. in a chiller and fruit and freshly squeezed orange juice. The Portuguese oranges are exquisitely sweet and there is Cava in the ice bucket - how civilised !. There is also a cooked breakfast option with eggs and ommeletes in every combination.

I cannot omit the excellence of the staff and manager. The two young ladies we encounterd daily were Adriana and Tatiana who were delightful and so helpful. The Manager Luis will do all he can to make your stay as comfortable as possible as well as arrange collection to or from Faro airport.

Importantly the hotel now accepts credit/debit cards which was a downside on earlier reviews.

The area around the hotel is completely traditional and very quiet, with one or two small bars nearby. It is a 5 minute walk downhill to the main drag but be aware the hills can be steep. Lagos is a really perfect Portuguese town with just the right mix of restaurants, shops and attractions.

The Casa da Moura is highly recomended for travellers who appreciate what good really means. This is no Holiday Inn or Hilton chain - thank goodness, it is different and quite wonderful.
