“A great little hotel on the edge of the town centre”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 March 2011

We had a great time here. This is a small hotel with about 15 rooms, about 15 - 20 minutes walk to the centre of town, In February the only staff are the owners who are brother and sister. A are a friendly pair and very hard working - working 7 days a week. This didn't stop then always having time to chat and make us feel welcome.

The hotel and its rooms are tastefully decorated with a selection of tasteful solid wood furniture and interesting nic nacs. The rooms which are a fair size are freshly painted and light and airy. To be honest, it wouldn't hurt to freshen up the bathrooms a little (in ours some of the tiles were cracked and the shower cubicle was a little jaded) but it was spotlessly clean.

The fact that we got this and breakfast for 50 Euro makes it very good value indeed, though the price is a lot higher in the peak season. We had a fantastic stay - thanks to the owners.

About Lagos. If you are looking for a base to explore from then I strongly recommend Lagos. It has lots of restaurants of which some are really good and night life if you want it. The town which even though has a fair amount of tourist is mainly a normal working and living part of Portugal so you can get a taste of the real Portugal. From here you have easy access to the main motorway that go across the Algarve so you can visit all the great places that they have.

“Long past its glorious days...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 November 2010

I'm really puzzled about all the rave reviews this place has received. We spent two nights at the Solar de Mos and, other than the very attentive staff, there is little to speak of.

First of all, I do not understand how on earth this place earned its 4 stars. This is NOT a 4-star hotel, I can see that it may have been one 20 years ago, but its glory has past a long, long time ago. Our room was dated, with mattresses that felt at least 10 years old, a closet with doors from the 70s, a "safe box" with no lock on it and a mini fridge with a permanent lock that will not open with the key provided. There was also a TV with no reception awkwardly and unevenly mounted to the wall (I guess to support the 4-star rating?) The bathroom was quite old too. Overall this place feels like an old retirement home, more so at breakfast where apparently only whispering is allowed...?

On the bright side the staff is attentive and the hotel is quite cheap. More importantly, Lagos is a very nice place definitely worth visiting. We really enjoyed its relaxed atmosphere. We will be going back to Lagos, but I certainly hope we can find a nicer place to stay...

“SMALL AND FRIENDLY OUT OF TOWN HOTEL”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 November 2010

A small and friendly hotel that is spotlessly clean with great hosts.A nice swimming pool and outside area.A lounge and well stocked reasonably priced bar.
Located in a nice residential area out of town which means you are faced with an 20 minute uphill walk back from the beach although there is a good local bus service and a taxi will only cost 4euros.
Not hard to see why its rated N01.

“A very friendly family run hotel made this a memorably relaxing stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2010

This was just what we needed: a pleasant and warm welcome from Nina on reception at a small hotel far enough away from the centre of Lagos to offer peace and quiet and a delightful pool and surroundings to relax in. We met guests who had returned year after year and were testament to the friendliness of the owners. The main town is about a 20 minute walk but there are restaurants nearer than that. Alternatively you can eat in the hotel if you order by lunch time and very nice it is too.

“Excellent small hotel with 5* standards”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 October 2010

Excellent family run hotel with high standards of cleanliness and service. It would be difficult to fault the Solar de Mos as it has everything but on a smaller scale.

It is located about a 20 min walk from the town centre, but if you have a car or want to use the local buses, this is not a problem.

Since it is a small hotel they ask that you book an evening meal before mid day, so they can avoid overcatering. We did not have evening meals as such, but the "Snack" menu , available all day, was extensive and when it came it was as good as a meal.

Rooms were spotless and very comfortable. I think they mostly have showers only. We had a bath and appreciated it. The standard of housekeeping was as good as in any 5* establishment.

The staff were very friendly but unobtrusive.

The only slight criticism was charging for the room safe, which is unnecessary in this day and age.

If you are swithering as to whether or not to book, just book, you will not be disappointed.
