“Gradually improving and a good location”

We revisited Porta Da Vila this October for a 9 night stay and can see how much it has improved since our last visit 18 months ago. Cleanliness is now far better with a cleaner who called 6 days a week and the towels and linen were also changed regularly this time. We had one of the Garden rooms (107) which is relatively quiet and has a roof terrace with excellent views across the town and Meia Praia beach. There are no views from the ground floor lounge or bedroom - but the roof terrace compensates for this. Like another reviewer we had a problem with noise on Friday and Saturday nights when some young Portuguese residents returned at 4.00am with a huge amount of shouting and laughing which resulted in no sleep until they finally all got into their apartments and presumably went to sleep. Happily they only stayed for the weekend. Things to bear in mind: kitchenette facilities are basic with two rings only and very cramped. OK for a snack but not too much more. TV - a few English channels, but nowhere near as many as privately rented apartments which usually have the full range of Sky channels. Lounge has just one settee and a dining table and chairs, so you either all sit on the sofa or on an uncomfortable wooden dining chair. Just one additional lounge chair would make a lot of difference. Reception is usually unmanned although the receptionist Isabel can be contacted on her mobile if you need her and she speaks excellent English. For us the best thing is the location at the top of town within the city walls. Value wise, at €50 a night, it is not as good as some of the apartments we've rented privately in the marina area for the same sort of cost which we've found are generally far better equipped. But on the plus side you are only 5 minutes walk from the city centre with the Porta Da Vila apartments.

“Great Location”

We had no problem finding it although the sign outside is poor. We had a lovely room on second floor with pool and sea view. The rooms are well equipt but need a little more care with the cleaning (a few dusty corners and cobwebs). The apartments are not serviced with 24 hour reception and this became a problem one night (Saturday) when there where a group of twenty somethings stopping at the apartments. When they arrived back at between 4.00am and 6.30am Sunday morning and only one had a key, they where banging on the front door to be let in and when nobody answered they climbed in over the walls. When the owner was told later she seemed very indifferent and didn't say anything.
The other thing is that due to the snack bar being closed people don't stay by the pool and the pool scene is definetly lacking atmosphere. When we arrived the pool wasn't very clean but the pool man came the next day and it was fine. Only saw him once that week though.
The big plus point about this place is it's location 5 minutes down hill to town and the same to the nearest beach. The marina is a lovely 15 minute stroll away. The apartments are clean but not immaculate.(Possibly I'm fussy) So to sum up if you want somewhere with a good location to town but very quite and you are just looking for somewhere to lay head that has pool to cool down in when required then this ideal.

“fantastic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 September 2011

We stayed here for 2 nights and had a lovely 1 bed appartment that over looked the pool, it was in a great location and easy access to the hidden beech and a short walk to the town. It was so peaceful and relaxing and had suck good views
Nice little kitchen, only missing an oven really..

The owner was so helpful showing us the routes to the shops etc!

After we checked out we left our bags and went to the beech, upon return they let us use a room for a shower..

We are looking to go back next year for some more surfing!

“a favourite hidden gem”

The apartments can be difficult to find as no name on door and one could walk by as the building looks more like an old portuguse villa rather than holiday apartments. No good for children, to quiet and not alot of room around the pool area for children to play, ideal for couples of all ages, we loved the peace and quiet around the pool have also stayed in May - At times we were the only ones sitting there, now and again another couple may appear but often felt like our own private villa- Also great location within 5mins from start of the busy town although it is downhill and is cobbled, heels no good. Isabelle is very helpful although you do not see her alot, the reception is not manded alot, but we liked this it did not feel like the normal holiday apartments, you had you own key for the main door and then for your apartment door. Our apartment on 3 floors, with roof terrace giving fab views, table and chairs up there, nice for lunch although a long way to carry up the vino, sandwiches etc, i loved to go up when all ready to go out in the evening have a glass or two of wine overlooking the view of the town and sea. Plenty of good places to eat and drink some noisy bars if you want them or quiet ones if not, we particulary liked Zanzibar music could get loud but a good crowd get in not to young and Alex behing the bar, think part owner is brill. Bit of a walk to the beaches although we were happy with the pool area did not bother with the beach apart from a nice walk on it, the main beach is very nice but i did like the other beaches to the right of the apartments which were more like the typical beaches for Portugal, nice coves and rocky. The Marina area also nice on an evening again with good places to eat and drink. Some small supermarkets in the town there is a larger one out of town slightly still in walking distance although you do not want to be carrying alot of heavy shopping best to take your trolley case if poss to bring shopping back in, esp water, wine etc, at times you could buy water from reception which is better - Overall lovely apartments, not luxury and maybe starting to need a bit updating but so peaceful esp May, Sep and Oct also we love Lagos one of our favourite places, will be hopefully going back here for many more holidays.

Room Tip: we did not overlook the pool we were on the side of the building but lovely view from roof terrace

“Difficult to find, but well worth it !!”

If I had to comment on one negative aspect of this hotel it was difficult to find. However, once we were at the hotel, everything was wonderful. We had a 2 floor room, which overlooked the pool. The wireless internet didn't work very well in the room, but did in the common area below the front desk. Our room was so quiet and it's a 5 minute walk to the beach. There are so many restaurants to choose from. This was our first visit to Lagos...I would definitely stay at this hotel again.

Room Tip: ask for a room overlooking the pool
