“Elegant but a little out of the way”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2011

We've stayed here twice and have not been dissapointed. This is a very tastefully designed hotel with beautifully appointed rooms and grounds. It's just a few minutes walk through the back gate to the lovely beach but for the evenings its a good 20 minutes walk into town and a little shorter walk to the marina area. A couple of silly things let a hotel of this calibre down; you are not provided with beach towels - instead you have to provide a deposit for a very small thin towel. I use good quality hotels in order to not have to bother with packing my own beach towel. Also on the last visit we were stayed towards the end of September and on 1 October the pool bar and restaurant closed. There were still many guests, the weather was roasting and lots of people round the pool. If you wanted to get so much as a drink of water you had to get semi dressed to go to the main building bar. I thought this was very short sighted on behalf of the management as the inside bar became overwhelmed with bare foot sun seekers just trying to get a drink and a snack. However, overall I would recommend this hotel. A little hidden gem of a bar for light meals and drinks at lunch is hidden in the trees across the road on the way to the beach. You have to walk right past it. It's also a private lido if you fancy a change.

Room Tip: If you're not upgrading to pool side then the land side rooms have better view on the right hand...

“Glorious beach and close to groovy Lagos”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 December 2011

My daughter (20) and I have stayed at the Vila Gale Lagos twice now and both times we've had a glorious holiday. There is the most superb beach just across the road, which you can walk along for what seems like miles in either direction. There are some great restaurants on this beach too but they get busy even out of season so you may need to consider booking. The beach was deserted both times we went, bar the odd Portuguese family (end August/early September both times) but the town of Lagos (which if you haven't been is really fun for ALL age groups) still had a real buzz and restaurants were busy. The hotel itself is fine, clean and serves its purpose, staff are very attentive and the rooms large enough to take all one's clutter. Breakfast, continental and English, is plentiful, but I wouldn't bother with dinner there, not too good. Taxis into town are very cheap, and it's only ten mins walk in the evening sun so you can get to all the lovely restaurants easily. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to have a fantastic beach holiday, with great food nearby (aside from the town and the beach restaurants, there's also a lovely restaurant just over the road from the hotel at the Dunas beach club if you can't be bothered to walk but it's very upmarket so a bit more pricey). We didn't bother with the pool, but the poolside cafe does a superb steak sandwich n chips and ice cold beer. Heaven. I'd go back to Vila Gale at the drop of a hat. And if you've got kids they'll love it too.

Room Tip: Try and get one overlooking the sea but to be honest its a quiet location so it doesn;t actually mat...

“We had such a relaxing time! Perfect!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 November 2011

Wow! What a lovely 4 days we spent here! Everything was really wonderful but the thing that sticks out was the the shape of the pool which meant there was such a lot of 'pool side' space for the umbrellas and lounges. Olive trees surrounding the pool area made it such a nice place to relax in the sun or shade. A short walk to the beach was a bonus (although it was hard to drag me from the pool!). Rooms were lovely and modern - the beds so comfortable for great sleeps! The huge spread for breakfast was great, and pool side snacks for lunch were tasty too. We headed into town each night for dinner and the kilometer (or so) walk was pleasant and easy. Staff were excellent and helped us with everything we needed - including recommendations for our next destination!! If we are ever back in Portugal I will be definitely spending some more time at Vila Gale!

“Beautiful hotel but depressing holiday”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 November 2011 via mobile

If I could move this hotel out of Lagos I would have rated it 5. We personally found Lagos a let-down and expected a little more authenticity/Portuguese from the algarve. However if you know what to expect from Lagos or you have been before and you like it then this is definitely the hotel to stay in.

The vile gale is a little out of the centre, rather secluded. The walk into Lagos is maybe 20mins but we found taxis cheap & reliable. the beach is across the road. Quite nice. Not stunning scenery, quite shelly but nice enough.

The hotel itself is stunning. The pool area is a dream, food is excellent, service impeccable and the rooms modern, clean-cut, masculine & 5*. (my only 2 complaints were that 2 beds were pushed together to make a double bed. which we were told was the case throughout the hotel, even in the suites...however the maid used double sheets/bedding to make it a 'proper' double bed!. 2nd complaint was the bathroom door did not lock, or close fully. It was a heavy wooden sliding door, very contemporary looking but impractical. I may be married but there are still some things I don't need to hear from my husband!

We started out in a suite but this was a dull view onto the carpark. We changed to a standard room overlooking the pool and sea fpr the same price. Far far better...those evening wines on the balcony would not have been the same overlooking the tarmac!

The spa was beautifiully done. Steam room and sauna were great.

breakfast was a huge selection and dining al fresco each morning was a lovely touch. We didnt try the evening buffet but we ate in the al acarte a few times, impressive food. Even the couverts were delicious. The pool snack bar served sandwiches and salads. Simple, fattening, but cheap and good for a snack with beer!

Evenings we ate in town. One big recommendation is the bahia beach bar about 7-10mins walk down the beach. A real find and some of the best sea-bass I have ever tasted. Goats cheese salads are fab too. Surprising for a little cocktail beach bar. Also try out No patio in central Lagos (dont be decieved by the name...it means new patio) excellent for a fine-dining romantic experience. very reasonably priced. We ate there twice and all starters, mains, deserts were amazing. Even the olive bread was perfect.

I would return to this hotel if it was in a different resort. It's such good value for money.

“Lovely Hotel, Beautiful Sunshine”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2011

We were not sure what to expect at this newish hotel but we were not disappointed. The staff were reserved but pleasant and efficient. The weather was a super bonus which meant that we could relax in the extensive pool area and being 'out of season' it was not crowded but with just enough people around. We were on half board and were not disappointed with the restaurant. The breakfasts had a large selection to choose from and the Coffee was very good. The Dinner in the evening was buffet style and came up to expectations and there was always a varied selection with a chance to try some local dishes. The Bar staff were efficient and a special word about the evening barman who gave excellent service. In the recent past we have found the Drinks and Snacks prices in Holiday Hotels overpriced and so were pleasantly surprised at this hotel that we did not feel overcharged. Our Bedrooms overlooking the Pool were kept spotlessly clean, and fresh linen and towels were regularly replaced.
Finally, we travelled on a package holiday by Jet2.com Holidays and everything was provided as per the brochure. We just couldn't have asked for more. Altogether, a brilliant holiday.
