If I could move this hotel out of Lagos I would have rated it 5. We personally found Lagos a let-down and expected a little more authenticity/Portuguese from the algarve. However if you know what to expect from Lagos or you have been before and you like it then this is definitely the hotel to stay in.
The vile gale is a little out of the centre, rather secluded. The walk into Lagos is maybe 20mins but we found taxis cheap & reliable. the beach is across the road. Quite nice. Not stunning scenery, quite shelly but nice enough.
The hotel itself is stunning. The pool area is a dream, food is excellent, service impeccable and the rooms modern, clean-cut, masculine & 5*. (my only 2 complaints were that 2 beds were pushed together to make a double bed. which we were told was the case throughout the hotel, even in the suites...however the maid used double sheets/bedding to make it a 'proper' double bed!. 2nd complaint was the bathroom door did not lock, or close fully. It was a heavy wooden sliding door, very contemporary looking but impractical. I may be married but there are still some things I don't need to hear from my husband!
We started out in a suite but this was a dull view onto the carpark. We changed to a standard room overlooking the pool and sea fpr the same price. Far far better...those evening wines on the balcony would not have been the same overlooking the tarmac!
The spa was beautifiully done. Steam room and sauna were great.
breakfast was a huge selection and dining al fresco each morning was a lovely touch. We didnt try the evening buffet but we ate in the al acarte a few times, impressive food. Even the couverts were delicious. The pool snack bar served sandwiches and salads. Simple, fattening, but cheap and good for a snack with beer!
Evenings we ate in town. One big recommendation is the bahia beach bar about 7-10mins walk down the beach. A real find and some of the best sea-bass I have ever tasted. Goats cheese salads are fab too. Surprising for a little cocktail beach bar. Also try out No patio in central Lagos (dont be decieved by the name...it means new patio) excellent for a fine-dining romantic experience. very reasonably priced. We ate there twice and all starters, mains, deserts were amazing. Even the olive bread was perfect.
I would return to this hotel if it was in a different resort. It's such good value for money.
