“An absolute disgrace”

I booked this holiday as a surprise for my husband after we got married. I paid nearly £800.00 with Thomas Cook and I can quite categorically say that after 15 holidays this was by far the worst appartments I have every stayed in. A bedsit in afghanistan would have been more pleasant. We were supposed to be getting a 3* Thomas Cook property however it was a 1-2 sun Sunset property that I bought on the recommendation of the travel agent. I have been on several holidays and we usually go for a basic clean 3 * just to put it into perspective and I have to say another couple who were staying in the hotel did have a newly refurbished room, however there were only 2 rooms that had been done. I stayed in the edifico block around the corner from the main entrance. It was basically like a flat you would rent if you lived in Portugal not a hotel accomodation block that you would be expecting for £400.00 per person. It is not like your standard hotel its more like a block of flats. I will add now that this accomodaaction has been removed from the Thomas Cook portfolio. You had to go through a metal grill (for our safety apparantly) and this was locked on a night, as soon as the door opened it smelled damp and musty and like wee. We walked in took one look around and walked out and phoned our rep to complain. Everything about the room was not right - mould growing on the ceiling and round the fan, there was dirt marks on the walls, sockets hanging off the walls and the bed sheets had so many marks on we slept fully clothed in the clothes we travelled in. I didnt expect the Ritz however clean and smell free would be the minimum you would expect. As I said earlier we arent fussy as we are always out doing things, but it was honestly so disgusting I couldnt have put up with it and stayed there. The pool is also only 6ft wide by 12 ft long if youre lucky. We complained and were moved to another hotel for £200 which we had to pay and were told we'd be refunded and werent. I can honestly say I would not recommend this place to anyone, even for a stag or hen party. I can honestly say it was the worst holiday of my life and I will never go back to Portugal as a result. Also for anyone considering Portugal, they tried to sell us drugs every night we were there and I would not suggest this resort for families at all.

“Loved our room..great base for the new town..”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 July 2007

We read conflicting reviews before our trip, so I was a little anxious about our stay. We had room D1 - which if you can request in anyway..please do! It was the best room in the accommodation. A VERY spacious self catering room - had hallway entrance, large double bed bedroom (with patio doors to pool), good size bathroom with shower and bath, lots of wardrobe space, large kitchen and large lounge area, with sofa, chair, dining table and lovely stone fireplace, and another set of patio doors, leading directly to the pool.
Small complex and pool. Only 5 sunbeds (one broken!) around the pool, but as quiet, we got 2 sunbeds every day and lounged around the pool. Was like having our own villa..only ever 2-3 other people around the pool - due to shortage of sunbeds I guess! So that is the one criticism I guess, but we get up early and never found it an issue.
If you just want a base for the main strip of bars/restaurants, then it's great. Only about 5-10 min walk to main New Town strip - very lively..lots of bars/restaurants (be warned, at weekend lots of stags/hens but never any trouble, as lovely resort)...
Taxi to old town (if you didn't get the train bus thing) is about 5 euros each way. Cheap. Old town is lovely, lots of nice restaurants (if you go through the tunnel, loevely restaruant overlooking the sea..excellent food and views)...
Loved Portugal..clean nice place. Accommodation was room - due to the size and space of our particularl apartment, we loved it. Cleaned daily.
We didn't see anyone from the complex from arrival to leaving. No bar or shop or anything. So if looking for that kind of thing, maybe not for you.
I would defo go back to this. We only paid £300 for the package holiday for 1 week, so it seemed very good to us for what we paid.

  • Liked — Spacious size of room and facilities
  • Disliked — only 5 sunloungers around the pool - but we worked this to our advantage

“Great Apartment and Facilities!! Ignore the negative Reviews.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 July 2007

We booked these apartments 2 weeks before we travelled. My friend and I managed to book a 2 bedroomed apartment at Duas Palmeras through Thomas Cook. After we booked we saw the reviews on here and were a bit worried after reading the negative one.

When we arrived the reception was a bit strange as it is just a small desk in a little room but the staff were very friendly. We were then shown round the corner and down the street. Looking a little worried we were reassured by the gentleman that we were in the new block - Eurolar.

I had asked for an apartment with a pool view and not on the ground floor when I booked and both requests were taken into account. We were on the 3rd floor over-looking the swimming pool. We had 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a well-equipped kitchen (complete with fridge freezer, oven and washing machine), dining room, living room and balcony. The swimming pool was fab as it was never too busy, you could always get a swim and the swimming pool wasn't surrounded by chavs like normal. The only thing it was missing was a bar to get drinks while you are outside.

If you are going to have a nice civilized holiday then don't go to 'the strip' it is like blackpool with luminous lights and chavs everywhere. If you do go to the strip make sure you go to the top end as it is nicer than further down the street.

If you are wanting to see the nicer side of Albufeira then go to the old town. You can get the train from the strip for a few euros return. It is nearer to the strip from the apartments than to the old town. We walked to the old town most nights (20 min walk) and returned by train.

If you want help with anything don't even bother trying the rep unless you are a bloke. If you want to hire a car go to Eirasol Apartments and they will help.

Just so you know it is really hot in the day and nice and breezy at night so bring a cardie for night. It is really refreshing though.

Would def stay in the apartments again. Won't be rushing back to the strip though. haha.

“Worst place I have ever stayed”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 June 2007

We arrived at the Duas Palmeras reception and was shown to the block behind called Edificio Varandim. This is in a residential street and not what you would normally expect from holiday accomodation. The block was on four floors and our family had one on level three and one on level four.

The entrance is pretty dismal, no lifts, so you have to carry cases up all those flights if stairs. The guard rail which stops you falling down the stairwell didn't fit the stairs properly, so there was a hole on each turn of the stairs where a small child could fall through. Considering that we had two four year olds with us this was not ideal.

Inside the apartments they were old and run down. The appliances were rusty and the kitchen in need of a refit. In fact the whole apartment needed gutting and starting again. Too many things to list here. No battery in the smoke alarm!.. amazing.

To get to the pool you have to walk through the unlit basement car park which is quite scarey. Not something I would like my wife and kids doing in their swimwear.

We immediately demanded to be moved, but were still there 22 hours later. The rep couldn't find anywhere for us to go so we moved out and into other accomodation at our own expense for the remaining 13 nights of our holiday.

The problem with these apartments is that there are five blocks. All the positive reports appear to be from people who stayed in the Eurolar block which I believe is quite new. Our block was dangerous, poorly maintained, dirty, smelly and run down. The worse place I have seen in 24 years of travelling abroad.

We booked early and paid £3,150 through a travel agent for two apartments in May 2007, and that didn't guarentee that we were put in the Eurolar block.

I would not recommed stayig here, unless you can get a guarentee that you are not in Edificio Varandim.... but I don't know what the other blocks were like inside. Heres a few photo's. I have load of others.

“Idea for couples”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 August 2006

Mostly private apartments, it was always very quiet with just a few people around the pool so loads of empty sunbeds ;-), at times we were the only one's there.
We were told that the sister complex shared their facilities (pool table etc), thats great if you don't mind a ten minute treck to get there.
There's no bar, so to get a drink you'll need to go to the cafe/bar across the road, it's fun trying to order when no'one speaks each others language.
We actually loved this complex, but our 9,16 &17 year olds want something livelier next year.
For a great night out, close by is Johnny Hoopers Saxophone bar, its fun for all ages, you'll be dancing the night away.
