We stayed on the 3rd floor, a small studio style apartment with a private terrace and a lovely view of the ocean. The Olhos do Mar itself is located in a lovely working fishing village called Olhos D'Agua.
Plus points:
1) Clean: the studio and kitchenette was very clean, and the room was tidied daily - towels/loo paper replaced.
1) Peaceful: This small resort was incredibly quiet, and perfect to sit out on the terrace and eat breakfast/have an evening drink without any disturbance what so ever, it's set back from the main road, no traffic noise issues either.
2) Reception - polite and friendly manner - one morning the shower head just dropped off - (the water appeared to have worn away the inner stem), but we got a replacement within 10mins.
3) Location: The proximity to the small local 'ecomarche' and a larger 'intermarche' was very handy, and the beach only a few minutes walk. The nearby towns of Albufeira and Falesia are only 10-15mins by a reasonably regular bus service, the bus stops are less than 5mins walk from the apartments. The village of Olhos d'Agua itself, is just perfect for a few days of relaxation at the beach. Some lovely restaurants and bars all within walking distance - the whole village just feels very relaxed, friendly and safe.
Problems:
1) No air con - and the room was extremely warm at the end of each day (probably due to the hot water tanks we discovered next door on day two) however there is a fan which was adequate
2) Self catering - the grill oven, but only the grill facility worked which made self catering difficult (there is a separate two ring electric hob which was fine)- however plenty of local eateries at reasonable prices available. The fridge would periodically 'rattle' every 2-3hrs which may annoy lighter sleepers.
3) Security- the reception closes at 8pm - there are side steps into the building, and a lift to all floors - there is a small side gate which allows you to enter the terrace in front of the studio apartment. The front access to the studio is a single glazed glass door (bottom half is metal) felt a little worried at first that someone could just smash in the window and jump in. A metal safe, which is bolted to the floor can be used - but this cost an extra 10 euro for a week.
4) Twin beds - this is a general lesson learned, don't assume two single beds will easily combine to make a double....
It's a shame that the resort itself feels out dated and tired - ok for young singles/couples/groups on a budget, there is a small pool, but it didn't look filtered, and really with the beach just a few minutes away, why bother. We really just wanted a quiet base near the beach, and without the typical resort feel of nightly entertainment and sitting round a pool all day. During the few days we were in the village, we discovered plenty of other resorts that looked much better presented - Olhos D'Agua and Oceanus Apartments and we will be exploring those options next time round.
