We have just returned from a 2 week stay at Flor de Laranja in the Algarve.
This accomodation is very peaceful all but the sound of a cockerel!! the holiday came with a car included in the package and is a must as its a few kilometres away from shops, bars and restaurants. Its a great base to come back to after a morning at the beach or a drive around the Algarve. we stayed in a one bedroom apartment (room 3a) which has two balconies. this was good because if you wanted sun or shade there was an option of which balcony to choose depending on where the sun was shining. This apartment had the best kitchen facilities I've ever used in a '3 star' self catering accomodation. with kettle, microwave, fridge freezer and full cooker (oven and four rings) with a choice of gas or electric power.
There is no bar - but it's lovely to sit 'chilling out' on the balcony or by the pool with drinks that we purchased at the nearby supermarket at very cheap price (1-2 euros for a bottle of wine, .50 for a bottle of lager/beer or 5 euros for a bottle of local spirits). There is however a small basic bar/cafe only a minutes walk away (to the left on the main road near the apartments) that sells coffee, tea, beer, wine, spirits, ice creams and sandwiches) and drinks are around 1 euro each with sandwiches at 1.50 - handy place to grab a cold drink or coffee when you first arrive!
I have listed a few of our favourite restarants in and around the area:- all to be reached by car.
Retiro do Isca - 5 minutes by car - 15 minutes on foot (not recomended though as the road has no footpath). Food very good and the restaurant is frequented by Portuguese people (8-30 euros for main course depending on choice, 15 euros for nice bottle of wine.. I recommend this restaurant for at least one visit during your stay).
Flor de Mar - 10 minutes by car in the Felesia area - Food basic & cheap but all cooked fresh (around 5-10 euros for a main course and 3 euros for half bottle of house wine).
Van Gogh - 15 minutes by car in 'Boliquieme' - it is signposted off the main road (a yellow sign) from the apartments heading towards the motorway - the conservatory part of restaurant overlooks the bay from the hillside. Food and wine are exquisite and the price depends on what you choose - if you google this place it has a food and wine menu online with prices and also a map of its location - the owner is a dutch lady and the restaurant serves a number of international dishes.
O'Pescatore - in Santa Eulalia - 15 minutes by car on the coast road heading towards Albufeira - turn off to Santa Eulalia beach park your car and look upwards to the left and there is a 'fish shaped sign' just near the beach restaurant. walk along the beach to the right and the restaurant is on a wooden platform raised above the beach. they do fresh fish by the weight or basic grilled (piri piri or garlic) chicken for 10 euros - this chicken was the best I tasted amongst five other restaurants where i tried the chicken.
We cooked a barbecue one evening on one of the three communal barbecues. we purchased fresh chicken and kebabs at the supermarket down the road (the first one as you turn right at the strip of bars, restaurants and shops).
another evening we also purchased a quarter of a suckling pig at a 'Take Away' 3 miles down the N125 heading west. you will need to order this at least 4 hours before - the take away is called 'Rosa Dos Leitoes' website is www.rosadosleitoes.com - it is closed on Mondays. The suckling pig was scrumptious and dis two of us an evening meal and lunch the following day.
i recommend the beach which is a short drive on the beach road at Felesia called something like Rocha Beixinha. turn down 2nd dirt track past a riding school on your left and then turn right just before some old plastic greenhouses, over a dirt track and you will come upon a car park, cafe and the beach itself. there are parasols and sunbeds for hire. they cost 12.50 euros for two sunbeds with pads and a parasol. if you tell them your staying half a day they will charge you less (10 euro) but you need to tell them.
I hope you find this information useful and enjoy your stay at Flor de Laranja if you decide to go there.
