“2nd visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

This was our 2nd visit to the Rocomar in 12 months, we were not disappointed. The hotel is in a prime location right on the cliff overlooking the main beach in Albufeira and a few minutes walk to the old town and fishermans beach area. The rooms are light, modern and spotlessly clean. Last time we were at the back of the hotel this time we were on the front with a sea view, all though rooms which are higher have a better view, but as we had'nt paid the extra supplement and just requested a sea view we were happy. There were about 5 rooms which opened onto a small fenced comunnal area, there was also a hot tub there, but this was not in use due to the time of the year. There are no kettles in the room, so if you like to make your own I suggest you bring a travel kettle as we did. Breakfast as before is much more than adequate in my eyes, personally I do not understand why people complain about it, my only complaint would be that the fruit juices are a little watery, otherwise I think the selection of items on offer are excellent. Fresh breads, fried eggs, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, beans, mushrooms, boiled eggs, fresh meats and cheese, cereal, fruit and yoghurts (not all of the hot food is available on the same day) tea, coffee and juice, what more could anyone possible want! If you are leaving early morning you can request a packed breakfast the night before which will be left in your room.

We were there over New Year, the weather was gorgeous and not expected (sunbathing on the beach), the New Years eve celebrations and fireworks were excellent, although some people said it had been scaled down from previous years.

There was lots of competition from the restaurants offering tourist menu's and you couold get a very good 3 course meal with wine and coffee for as little as 10 Euro, excellent value.

All in all another great trip to Portugal.

Room Tip: Request a sea view on a high floor

“Sun, Sand and Sea”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

The hotel is located on the edge of the cliffs, overlooking a wide, sandy bay. The public areas have recently been refurbished in a contemporary style and it would appear that upgrading is continuing in other areas. Bedrooms either face a somewhat noisy road or have a sea view, for which extra is charged, but beware that a block of them is at an angle, which restricts the hours of sunlight, but does give a fine view of a high steel security fence! We had a full seaview room, which was not cramped and was spotless. There was maid service daily, with little extra touches like facecloths and shampoo. We were on the second floor, yet there was only the noise of the waves at night, meaning good sleeps.
The lifts are unusual, having an outward opening outer door(manual), yet a conventional inner one. There was also a spa, but no specific pool. On the third floor there was an open air plunge pool 0.9 meters deep, but unheated.
On half board, meals were buffet style with a restricted choice, though there was always plenty of meat and fish, plus salad stuffs. There was only one hot vegetable at dinner, where the food was not always hot enough. There were no prices of restaurant drinks displayed, but on enquiry they turned out to be the same as the bar ones. We feel that this should be corrected(they might sell more).
The staff were pleasant enough, though not all are fluent in English. It is worth pointing out that the hotel is non-smoking throughout, including bedrooms and balconies, and they will levy a 100 Euro deep cleaning charge if evidence of smoking in the bedrooms is found.
The location is to the west of the Old Town, which is five minutes walk and is full of shops and bars. There are one or two shops and bars on the way, handy for the hotel. The bus station is at the north end of the Old Town, about 15 minutes walk. Being on the opposite side of town to 'the Strip' it is quieter and not like Benidorm.
Would we return? Yes

Room Tip: Get a seaview room, but ask to see it first, in case it is one of the angled ones.

“Definitely NOT for the disabled”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

Not an easy review to write. I can fully understand the enthusiastic comments. The view from much of the hotel is great- provided it overlooks the beach; definitely not otherwise. The staff can be very helpful and charming but the odd one suffering a bad hair day can mar that impression.

However...

I am disabled and always check most carefully by phone that a hotel is suitable for me. I was assured it was. It most definitely was not.

Decanted from the transport from the airport at the 'front' entrance which, because of the odd position of the hotel, stretching from the top of the cliff to half-way down, is actually the third floor. To add to the confusion, the reception desk is at a higher level, up steps. Then, to reach the lift so as to access one's room, two more lots of steps. And, remember, you've just arrived, humping your luggage. so, check in at reception (my fellow-guests having taken pity on me and heaved up their luggage as well as mine). I asked for asistance with my luggage and was curtly told (bad hair day) that there was no assistance. That's the situation: if you have heavy luggage, if you're elderly, if you're disabled, if you need any help whatever, don't ask: there is none. My fellow guests again lugged my luggage as well as theirs up to the lifts.

There are, I understand, strict laws, British and European, covering accessability for the disabled. They appear not to apply here. That puzzles me.

“great location stunning view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2012

We went here in May 2010 and the hotel/location/views were spot on! The hotel is a 6 minute walk from the square in which you can find plenty of restaurants and town shops. There is a strip in which you need to get a taxi to where there are clubs + bars are but we didnt visit that area. There are little back streets in which have small restaurants so you can go there if you dont want to be near the hussle of the entertainment. The hotel was very clean but the pool is small and sun loungers are limited and so is the sun space. The whole balcony where the pool is located is shaded by about 4pm most days. Although this hotel is on the beach front in which you have to walk down steps/slopes to get to which takes no more than 4 mins at an easy stroll. The hotel staff in general are good - although the restaurant staff could do with cracking a smile every now and then. The entertainment in the hotel is poor but this didnt disturb us as there was plenty to do in the square. We went beginning of May but would recommend going june at the earliest as we had 3/10 days of rain.

Room Tip: get a seaview room
