We stayed at Pousada Santa Maria as part of our honeymoon and loved it.
The staff were fantastic and so helpful from our first encounter: they never faltered and were always happy to go the extra mile. On one occasion, we wanted some snacks to have with a drink in our room; after asking at reception where we could buy some, we were told that there was nothing open but the manager was happy to provide complimentary dishes of nuts and crisps! Staff were always available and ready to help which was a nice contrast to the pousada we stayed at previously.
We were fortunate enough to get room 312 which has awesome views from the balcony - we enjoyed our complimentary champagne there!
Breakfast was very good and always served on time (or even early some days). The view from the breakfast room is again fantastic.
Access to the pousada is not the best, particularly as the roads are very narrow and steep (and the Portugese drive on the 'wrong' side of the road for us Brits!). We were nervous about driving into Marvao so parked just outside the gate and walked to the pousada - about five minutes maximum which made life a lot less stressful for us. If you choose to do this, we would recommend that you think about a small overnight bag rather than having to transport your main luggage. Neither Marvao or the pousada are suitable for people with mobility difficulties - the roads are very steep and mainly cobbled whilst the pousada has many stairs on all levels.
