We stayed at the el Rei Dom Manuel for two nights and it was part of a wonderful and charming visit to Marvao and the valleys below. The hotel is spotless and quiet and the rooms are lovely -- it costs a little more for a view of the valley -- and have all the amenities you'd want. The staff is very attentive and friendly and helpful -- it's family run, and the family is very warm. Someone else described this as being like the "Bates Motel," which isn't true. It's a little formal and quiet (I could have done with out the pan flute music) but, for a small rural town, it was a wonderful place to stay, and a better value than the nearby parador. The breakfast is very lush with plenty of choices and the restaurant serves very good dinners -- tasty and local, although not particularly fancy. Plus, free wi-fi in the middle of the country! The best thing is that it's located in Marvao which is a fabulous, undiscovered walled hilltop town. There were few tourists around, and we went to the top of the walled fort to watch the spectacular sunset with not another person around -- very romantic. (The sunset is my account photo.) Marvao has lovely gardens and is a great base for wonderful hikes or drives in the country. We couldn't believe we had it almost all to ourselves.
