Firstly, I am not sure if this is a 3 or 4 star hotel, which makes a difference in writing a review. When I read reviews and booked, I thought it was 4 stars, but when I arrived it said 3. Anyway, I would say it leans more towards 4 stars but has a few major areas to improve.
The man at the reception was extremely helpful and efficient, despite being alone and run off his feet the 3 days I was there. When I arrived I discovered the hairdryer didn't work and he immediately produced one from under the desk and let me keep it until I checked-out.
The room looked like a 4 star hotel room: spacious, decently decorated, good-size bathroom which was clean etc.. Now, here comes the main problem- the room was on the ground floor and looking out onto the garden with the swimming pool and facing other rooms. Fine, if you have gauzy curtains, but if you only have the thick plastic ones to block out light, it means that you are either permanently in the dark (with electric lighting during the day), or everyone in the the hotel, including guests and gardeners can see you. This is what makes the hotel lose a lot of points in my opinion and I just can't believe that something so basic and obvious wouldn't cross someone's mind when designing the room. Furthermore, while I was there, they were doing some work in the garden and I had 5 men right outside my room all day, singing and making noise.
The lack of daylight would normally be a big issue for me, but since I only stayed 2 nights and was always out sightseeing, it didn't affect me too much. However, as I said, this is what makes the hotel not quite a 4 star. Breakfast was fairly good, but nothing spectacular. The location of the hotel is good: just outside the city walls and only a few minutes walk to the central square, however, being a solo female traveller, I feel I should warn others that you have to cross a slightly dodgy unused parking lot which is dark and a bit cary at night. I didn't have any problems and was told Evora is very safe, but do keep this in mind if you are travelling alone. Overall, the hotel was good value for money (and the little man at reception didn't make me pay for the water I drank from the mini-bar).
