This is a very good example of a classic Portuguese pousada, impressive historic building in beautiful surroundings. The rooms are big and well equipped with antiquities and old paintings and with a wonderful view of the scenery around the beautiful town of Estremoz. The staff was most friendly and helpful. Furthermore I must say I find some of the comments about lacking maintenance and cleanliness hard to understand, however, on the critical side I think they could improve the menue in the restaurant. 3 main courses do represent a very limited choice, and we opted for the Sao Rosas restaurant next door for dinner, but breakfast was good. I have no hesitations about recommending this pousada.

This is another well converted historic building. Our (superior) room was very spacious and comfortable. Breakfast is very good, and staff are friendly and helpful. We have given the "very good" rating on this basis.
However, we did not enjoy our lunch there. We had one of the local specialities, lamb stew, but it was really a glorified soup with poor quality lamb.
The signposting to the hotel is poor.

The hotel tower was being renovated during our stay, so we missed seeing it or using the billiard room. The hotel was also empty except for one other couple which made it feel rather lonely. The cocktail lounge is large and comfortable with high vaulted ceilings, as has the dining room, as you'd expect in a castle. Breakfast was mediocre, below par for a place that is supposed to be luxurious. We also didn't appreciate being charged 3 euros per bottle of drinking water in the rooms, when usually it's free. The view out out of our room's window was spectacular. The furnishings are antiques and there are period paintings on the walls, but they are not of exceptional quality, but do fit well with the castelly atmosphere. Overall, I'd recommend making Estremoz a day trip.

Very interesting, impressive old structure, but the rooms are small and in need of some serious maintenance and updating. Lack of good signage makes it difficult to find, as opposed to most other Pousadas and Paradores that we recently visited. Of the three pousadas and three paradores (in Spain) that we just stayed at, this was the poorest, and led to our leaving a day sooner than originally scheduled.
