Elvas is a lovely town to visit and is known for its summer music festival. There are few hotels in the city, mostly without any charm. The Quinta Santo Antonio Estalagem is one of the nicest places to stay in the area.
The hotel built as an extension to a lovely stately manor. There are vast gardens and a big swimming pool and it is in the country but 10 minutes from the center of Elvas. The staff is friendly and helpful. The entry, courtyard and public spaces are in the old manor that includes a private baroque-style chapel. The rooms, located in the 1980's building, are spacious and comfortable as are the bathrooms. There are animated evenings on the terrace. Breakfast is a generous and good buffet. The clientele is primarily Spanish and Portuguese, very “family”.
The atmosphere, however is strange and out-moded, a sort of 1980's last year in Marienbad with a ting of nostalgia and end-of the world depression. The vast gardens have seen better days and the historic building, although repainted and pristine, needs work.
