“Appauling. Run down rooms and Rude Staff.”

Firstly, upon arrival at the Empire, the clerk told me that the hotel was full ('It was a busy weekend and there we are' said the unhelpful individual) and despite paying up front and having booked 8 weeks in advance, I was told my booking was not guaranteed. I was also informed I would have to stay in another hotel - the Hotel Washington which was not my choice and considerably below my basic standards.

When I refused, I was firstly told that the Manager was off the premesis until the following day. I stood my ground and the manager mysteriously appeared minutes later.

A room was also found and upon arrival I wish I had simply cancelled and walked away. The room had a non working desk lamp, holes in the curtain and a strange plastic clad bathroom area reminiscent of the inside of an old portakabin.

Oveall, you can get much better value at the Hofkammers, Louisa or Ter Kade hotels. I will not be staying at the Empire again.

“Fantastic”

We recently had a 3 night break in this hotel. The rooms were clean, the ensuite bathrooms superb. We stayed fully inclusive, and there was plenty of food. They came round with seconds at dinner, the food was hot and fresh. A good selection for continental breakfast too. There was a free evening bar, and the local lager was very nice indeed. If you wanted a drink not included in the free list, the prices were very reasonable. The staff were polite and spoke excellent English. Would definately stay there again, and recommend this hotel highly.

  • Liked — comfortable beds, clean bathroom
  • Disliked — rooms a little smaller than average
  • Tips/Secrets — drink the local free lager!

“great hotel”

My boyfriend and I have just been on a four day trip to Ostend and found this hotel to be great. The rooms were clean and comfortable and were surprised at how cosy and warm the hotel was at all times (not too hot) even though the weather was a tad bit on the cool side outside! We found the staff to be very pleasant and the food was also well above average (the roast beef with mustard gravy was my personal favourite). We were also offered seconds so there was plenty of food to go round. I even managed to sneak in an extra bowl of icecream with Belgian chocolate sauce! Enough about the food. The hotel is literally a stone throw away from the beach and close to bars and eateries. It certainly got a big thumbs up from us and I would return with no hesitation whatsoever.

“one of the best”

I must disagree with the review I have just read "Terrible" by Tripadvisor.

I have stayed at The Hotel Empire on at least 10 occasions and find the staff very friendly and kind and the hotel itself okay. There are different sizes of rooms available at different rates. I also know that you get what you pay for and in the case of this hotel you get more than you pay for. I have also stayed in many other hotels in Ostende and can assure you that this one is very good and very reasonably priced. I think the problem is that visitors to Ostende expect the hotels to be of the same standard as they are in some parts of The United Kingdom, this is not the case.

The Hotel Empire is a friendly very clean hotel and the food although basic is nicely cooked and presented. The breakfast is fantastic - a self serve buffet, including cereal, toast, bread, buns, cold meats, cheese yogurt etc.,

For the past 3years, I have actually stayed in the apartments next to the hotel, which I really enjoy (more space and flexibility) but still take my breakfast at the hotel and if I desire my evening meal.

I have always found the staff at the Hotel very efficient and friendly. As for being on time for meals - yes, like most hotels in Ostende the staff work extremely hard and you normally find that at the most there is perhaps only 2 staff catering for the whole of the restaurant. I feel perhrps that your tripadvisor reviewer was a little bit harsh. Try staying at some of the other hotels and then make a comparison.

I for one am looking forward to next year and my holiday in Ostende. I have tried other countries but always conclude that Ostende is the placefor me and the Hotel Empire Apartments the best I have ever been to.
