“Average Hotel with good breakfast”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 May 2010

I actually have to agree and disagree with the above comments.
My stay in Oostende should have been for two nights but I only could get one room for the first night online in advance, as I was late with booking. So my first day I walked into the Empire to ask for the way, but after checking they had a room available for the second night. I was surprised how friendly and helpful the receptionists were and I was even given an invoice for my advance payment. The hotel lobby is small but very inviting as well as very clean.
When I finally checked in the next day I was told that my room wasn’t booked but after showing the advance payment invoice I immediately received my room key and was told of the main extras, for example breakfast and dinner times. The elevator up to the 5th floor was small and scary and made me walk the stairs until the next day. The double room itself is small and fitted only with the basics (bed, chair, table, wardrobe, TV, armchair). Even though it was a smoking room it didn’t smell. Everything looked old, the bed linen in a slight yellow color, the arm chair was broken down, the TV build on the top wall, but so small you had to concentrate to see anything at all and the window was located to a small inside area where the fire escape stairs came right along your window. As a good point though I could leave the window open while smoking and the noise from the street was around zero. The bathroom looked build in, very cheaply made out of plates to save the tiles. It was fairly clean and the bath tub seemed smaller than a normal shower.
Breakfast the next morning was included in the room rate and only available from 7.30am to 9.30am. It offered different breads, sweets, croissants, juices (not fresh), coffee, chocolate, tea, cheese, ham, honey, different cereals and fruits. Basic but all you need for a good start.

FAZIT: For one or two nights a standard single or double is ok considering you don’t spend much time in the room itself. For a longer stay I would book a bigger apartment or different hotel. Even though it wasn’t very clean/updated and had a few take backs, I was very surprised by the friendly hotel personal on different occasions (Even hotel staff has bad days and difficult guests are always nerve racking…) and the very good breakfast. As well the location both to the city centre and beach is fantastic.

“YOU may book here but you may not stay here”

Arrived at the hotel empire to see typed notice that it was closed.

I understand this is common practice by the hotel chain. We were booked in at another hotel in the same group

We alked the 300 metres to the other hotel. It was pssable we had a three single bed room. very basic. Bathroom clean but one blanket on bed which had seen a great deal of use and grubby floor. we asked for additional blankets None were provided.

Aftershave smothered receptionist gave what was obviously a well rehearsed spiel.

Beware. You may well not get what you pay for.

“O K for a cheap break”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 November 2008

We stayed at this hotel for two nights on the 1st weekend of May as part of a 4 night trip with National Holidays with the other two being on board P&O ferrys out of Hull.We used it as cheap way to do the two day walks of Flanders. The hotel is part of the westminster group of hotels.I belive in the saying you get what you pay for. For the price this is a good way to see Belguim. Yes this was not the best hotel we have stayed at but it is not the worst. The room was clean the food was better then ok. One downside we had to walk over the road for our meals to the Westminster hotel. As we had stay there two weeks before we knew the staff and where very frendly to us. The Empire is a budget hotel used for coach trips and for the price you pay you get a very good deal. If you are thinking of short break and you do not expect the Hilton then this hotel should do.

  • Liked — The price we payed for the weekend away
  • Disliked — Nothing we got what we payed for.

We have been staying here each year since 1997 and have to disagree with the adverse comments. We have always enjoyed good service, excellent food, and happy times here. Would not want to stay anywhere else as long as we come to Oostende. M and K Allen

“Appauling. Run down rooms and Rude Staff.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 May 2007

Firstly, upon arrival at the Empire, the clerk told me that the hotel was full ('It was a busy weekend and there we are' said the unhelpful individual) and despite paying up front and having booked 8 weeks in advance, I was told my booking was not guaranteed. I was also informed I would have to stay in another hotel - the Hotel Washington which was not my choice and considerably below my basic standards.

When I refused, I was firstly told that the Manager was off the premesis until the following day. I stood my ground and the manager mysteriously appeared minutes later.

A room was also found and upon arrival I wish I had simply cancelled and walked away. The room had a non working desk lamp, holes in the curtain and a strange plastic clad bathroom area reminiscent of the inside of an old portakabin.

Oveall, you can get much better value at the Hofkammers, Louisa or Ter Kade hotels. I will not be staying at the Empire again.
