“Needs to smarten up”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 February 2011

The standard room we originally ordered was very small and at the top of the building. After two minutes in the room we decided to upgrade, as to enter the bed ,both of us would of had to get in one side ,the bathroom was small and only had a shower,no bath.It cost us an additional 165 Euros for two nights to get a upgrade which was much larger but the bedding was in need of replacing, the pillows were flat and uncomfortable. The bar and restaurant weren't open during our stay. The hotel is obviously family run and I felt the family members I met did the job as a chore but would rather be doing something else. Very insincere.

We certainly appreciated your feedback however, needless to say, this leaves us with a very bad feeling.

The room originally assigned was indeed a small room with a shower but then again… the description of the room itself when booking is as follows: Small Budget Room with shower.
Therefor we do not understand the relevancy of mentioning this as we have assigned you the room that you had originally booked.

We would like to point out that - in the room you were assigned to after your upgrade - the bedding had recently been renewed. This most likely is a matter of personal preference and we would undoubtedly have been able to make your stay more comfortable if any concerns would have been shared with us the moment of your stay.

Our hotel is indeed family run and we feel that it is our duty to give the best of ourselves on any point of view. We feel sorry for not meeting your expectations and hope to have the ability of welcoming you in the future.

“nice, clean, basic room and great location”

Just returned from Brugge with my wife. Paid a total of 300Euros for Eurostar from London and two nights here.
Very clean hotel and a nice breakfast. Hot bacon, eggs, vast selection of cold meats, bread, jams etc. The location here is great for all sights. No more than a 15 minute stroll to most attractions and still quiet in the evening. The only sound we heard in our room was the church bells at dusk.
Definately recommend it, but I would say its not a 5* hotel. Still, very clean, friendly staff, cant fault it.
Old building and probably needs a lick of paint to smarten it up a bit but Im just being a bit fussy and letting people know. I would stay again, and if you've never been to Brugge before the location is great.

We are proud to read that you loved the room on the first floor, especially since we have done renovation works. It also brings us pleasure reading that you enjoyed our restaurant; that has recently won a 'Lifetime Achieving Award' with. We hope you will return soon.

“De Castillion: Getting people's attraction with cheap offers that turn out double price”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2011

Be careful: The Hotel De Castillion puts very attractive offers on its website. When you try to book them, the booking system suddenly shows double price or more. When you send an email complaining about that, they tell you it is your fault and you misunderstood the price.
This ist not the way a 4 star hotel should act.

“Characterful but flawed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2011

Stayed in early Jan. Good points are the location and the Art Deco lounge which is small but very impressive. Previous reviewers mentioned that the rooms were small so we paid extra for a deluxe room and were assigned room 3. This room was at the end of a dark shabby corridor with artex walls and no natural light and past the kitchens. The room was 'shabby chic'. Very traditional style but very tired. The floor was wooden block that needed restoring, the bathroom was straight off the bedroom with no working extractor fan!! Shower was not facing the length of the bath but across the bath, needless to say the water went everywhere. Sheets were thin and worn but towels were plentiful and very clean as was bathroom. Service was not proactive. The reception was never manned but once we found a member of staff they were helpful. Restaurant was closed to end of Jan. Breakfast was poor. The first morning there was scrambled egg and bacon but the next morning there was neither as ' there were only two people staying at the hotel'. After making the point that we would like what was served the previous day the girl went to make it without complaint. This hotel has a lot of character but is really just a three star hotel. If your expectation is three star you will probably not be disappointed
