“service was good but the food was slightly lower than my expectation”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 August 2010

We stated that we wanted the mussels as the starter and the mixed grilled as the main course. Unfortunately, they came at the same time so we rushed to finish the grill first. The meat we had was not fantasticly delicious but it was ok. The mussels were ok but they put far too much of celery and cabbage to cook with. Cabbage? Maybe the Belgian way? I had never had cabbage in my mussels in France. I think they forgot to put enough white wine and garlic in as we ordered the pot with garlic and white wine. No garlic taste whatsoever.
Even though we went in summer, you are advised to wear your jacket there as it can be very chilly and windy there. Waiters are kind and friendly enough to tell what about the weather is like there.

“how on earth do they make money if they ignore their clientele?”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 July 2010

FORGET IT!!!! The service is disgustingly BAD. We were only looking to have a beer on their terrace but we were completely ignored (I don't think they even looked to see if our table needed service!) ... eventually we asked to be served, but to no avail. we waited so long, we walked away (we noticed others too were not impressed). Please don't even bother considering this establishment, there are way too many other places that deserve the money (and better reviews!!).

“Avoid. Great view but terrible service, worse food.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 June 2010

Looking around with a group of friends to find a decent spot to eat, we found the Uilenspiegel. They moved 2 guests to a different table so we could sit. (A group of 10 people). It then took 30 minutes to take our drink order and another 15 to serve it. (Some sodas and beer, nothing fancy). We should have taken that as a warning. We stayed however because we were exhausted from a busy and hot day.
Five people ordered a starter, the soup of the day, tomato soup. Two of them had a fly in it. Not on top, but buried in the soup. That means the flies are in the pot in the kitchen. The waiter came and tried to blame us for the flies. We refused to eat the tainted soup and we had it removed from the bill. When the main course arrived the trouble wasn't over. One of the mixed grills had raw chicken. Both the spareribs orders were bland and incredible chewy, as if they were microwaved before serving. The mussels tasted terrible and were way to watery and no sauce or dip was served. The mayonnaise was served in closed plastic cups of which 2 out of 3 cups were oily and had gone bad due to most likely leaving them in the sun. The fries were certainly not freshly fried.
When confronted the waiter with our problems he started to argue with us. The mayo was delivered to the restaurant in that state, the chicken was fine to eat cause you don't get sick if it's pink, all their spareribs were freshly grilled and they were not responsible for buying bad mussels. After a small discussion he agreed to clear 1 mixed grill and serve us all coffee. In our eyes this was not nearly good enough but we didn't want to waste more time. The most annoying of it all was that he never admitted that it was their fault. He kept making excuses instead of accepting that he had served us multiple bad meals. He left the table and vanished for another 25 minutes until we had enough and told him to leave the coffee and bring the bill. The whole ordeal took us almost 2.5 hours in total.
One fly in the soup is possible and could happen everywhere. Two fly-filled soups out of 5 is extremely, extremely unlikely. But when they serve 10 main courses of which there were problems with 5, you've got a terrible, terrible kitchen. If it was busy we would perhaps have understood that things go wrong when you're in a rush. But the restaurant was half empty when our main course came.
The service overall was one of the worst I had come across since a few years and the food was, however unlikely the possibility, worse.
I will never visit their restaurant again and I cringe at the thought of the state of their rooms and beds given our experience.
I later heard that it used to be a good restaurant but there had been a change of management. That seems to have been for the worse.
Do not visit this place.

“nice and quiet”

Stayed here for one night only in Dec. This hotel is only few minutes walk from the Burg and is right next to a canal. they have a restaurant downstairs and 6 rooms upstairs. Our room was basic with an en-suite shower room. The place was clean and comfortable. The price included breakfast which was served downstairs in the restaurant. Huge amount of pastries(pain au chocolat, raisin swirl), cereal, cold meat(salami, ham), jam, cheese selection and a little plate of chocolates plus juice, coffee, tea and milk. The owners were very hospitable. Good value for money!!
